Unreal...I have dropped the camera at least 2x and caught it mid air both times. I also handed it to model and she dropped it and somehow again, I caught it in midair.

Today my luck ran out and i dropped it but luckily put my foot out to break the fall and dented it just a bit near the dreaded flimsy door to begin with battery door...

The camera is functioning perfectly thank god and it looks straightforward to replace the part that is dented...

Anyone have any idea of the cost of that part and if Leica indeed even sells parts?

Great way to start my day..ouch.

time to get yourself a nice neckstrap, just to be safe ;)

This was first day with the wrist strap...ughhh.... guess I have to be happy I didn't damage the lense or any functioning of the camera..but the dent right near the battery door really bothers me..that door is not all that strong as it is...

Why don't you use the neck strap it came with? Also very nice is Leica M straps and very secure and less obtrusive than the Xs

I will use the neck strap again. I need to find some way to make it easier to remove though...

I need to find a good 'half case' as it would have probably saved the camera from the damage it got today...

Solution is the neck strap, not the half case. A half case -may- protect it or again, may not. With the included leather strap, which is also very good in that its not interfering with your shooting, you will never drop it again

Despite its lack of easy removal, my X1 has lived with its neck strap since Day 1. I have already written about my strong preference for the hand-grip. These are the obvious remedies for you.

That sucks. I've been there before. I had a Contax T2 back in the 90s that I dropped right on the dial and I could not use. I got it repaired and dropped it again on the day I got it back denting it again. At that point I just used it as is and sold it dented later. It's not a good feeling... I feel bad for you. From that point on, I didn't use wrist straps on expensive cameras.

Don't laugh...... I dropped mine and dented the top near the flash, popping of the flash cap, denting that as well, with in 30 mins of purchase. The flash is now jammed and the case has a nasty looking dent. It seems fine however. I now keep it on the neck strap at all times. I will be testing my Leica Passport real soon....

Oh, don't worry about anyone laughing about that..That's horrible.

I emailed Luigi for a half case for the X1 and M9 . I also will probably get a grip...(i need to get a grip..lol)...

The half case is very needed for me, to be used with the neck or wrist strap.

I'm very lucky I only dented the plate which won't be too bad to replace..It's not a huge dent but more of a ding...wonder what a new plate's gonna cost.

could have been much worse.

I dropped my first Canon 5D shooting in Puerto Rico on the first day. Could not focus the 24-105 lense..Fell directly onto concrete...very sickening of course.

I returned to the hotel and while getting out of the car, the case was not secured properly and a 16-35mm lense fell out and also got damaged...I was besides myself.

Canon fixed both lenses under warranty without even a question!

The next trip to Puerto Rico I brought my 1DS II and forgot the battery charger and had a dead battery.

Have to be so careful and military in how to treat and prepare our gear. I have 4 systems and it's a job knowing what's where and what's what.

I want to simplify it by getting an S2...lol

I've found most of the so-called wrist straps out there are just junk made for pocket cameras. The good news is that the X1 has full sized real Leica style lugs...so I made my own strap by taking apart the strap from my Nikon D200. What you see is just the adjuster and snap made into a single loop that fits across my hand. You will pull my hand off before it slips and it stays out of my way when in use.

Good idea and I ordered some quick release hooks for both Leica's. I really don't like not having these cameras in a half case and knew I was going to drop it!

Might as well admit what I did as it's so pathetic maybe it will at least give us a comic break..

So on that note...I got the Leica wrist strap and ever ready case...I like the 1/2 part of the case but the whole thing doesn't work for me..So I took off the half case and put on the strap.

I was not even shooting but am in the habit of carrying a camera so I had the X1 with me while I went out to breakfast (meaning..no coffee yet)..

I went to the bathroom and had to wash my hands...so...I put the wrist strap between my teeth while I washed them..

I don't remember how exactly I did this but I think I had sunglasses on the top of my head, reached for them and automatically put one end of them in my mouth..

and of course...the X1 dropped as I tried to catch it with my foot.

It's hard to make this stuff up...and I am lucky only the replaceable bottom plate was dented..but boy did I feel stupid and I can't have this camera not in a case and attached to me for awhile...

ordered the grip and maybe I will hear from Luigi some day...although I am not hopeful..

Hmmm, sounds like something I would do at a bar...I've found that with the strap I concocted if I need to take a leak I can force the loop up my forearm and it stays there....have to be careful about back splash however.

You can also use Leica's M neck strap as it is. Leica M strap costs some 20-30 euros, and it can easily fold because it is made of strong fibers. As opposed to the X one which is made of leather

thank you for that post and the timing is good as I ordered a strap for the M and can use the M with the X...good call!

..from the sounds of it you should have been a footballer, not a photographer

I think maybe a juggler...just need some more practice...I just took this thin strap off of a loop and put it on the X1 and it's light and snaps right on...those rings are way to tedious to put on and remove.
