WarriorJazz Posted April 14, 2010 Share #1 Posted April 14, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Aaargh,... I've had my M8 for only 4 months now and it starts to have shutter faults. First only in C mode but now even in S mode. The dealer just send it back to Leica and told me this will take at least 6 weeks! How will Insurvive these weeks without my Leica? :-( I've read horrific experiences on this forum about people waiting on there camera for over more than 3 months! Is this normal for Leica? And can somebody cheer me up by telling me they got there Leica back really quick? :-) At least it will be fixed and I'll go back to shooting film for a while. - Eelco
Advertisement Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 Hi WarriorJazz, Take a look here Broken M8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
gwelland Posted April 14, 2010 Share #2 Posted April 14, 2010 I think your experience depends entirely upon where you live, where you sent it and whether you paid for expedited service or not (in Europe at least). Sorry to hear about your camera. Are you getting the Shutter fault message or is the motor winding on going mad? (This happened to my first M8 too - Leica fixed it plus I upgraded it to an M8u while it was there).
WarriorJazz Posted April 14, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted April 14, 2010 Thanks for your reply. I get both! The shutter just goes mad and I get the Shutter fault message. The red light then keeps blinking and after a while I can turn it back on and you can hear the shutter going back. What does the M8u upgrade mean? Is that the newer more silent shutter?I hope so :-)
trs Posted April 14, 2010 Share #4 Posted April 14, 2010 I hoping that it won't take as long as they say it will. Estimate for mine from NJ is 2-3 months. Shutter Fault, too. I bought myself a M6, I wanted one any way. Back to old school again.
gwelland Posted April 14, 2010 Share #5 Posted April 14, 2010 Thanks for your reply.I get both! The shutter just goes mad and I get the Shutter fault message. The red light then keeps blinking and after a while I can turn it back on and you can hear the shutter going back. What does the M8u upgrade mean? Is that the newer more silent shutter?I hope so :-) M8u covers a number of upgrades, one of which is the quieter & slower shutter. I didn't upgrade the shutter in mine but instead had the framelines/LCD glass done instead. The machine gun shutter was done under warranty whilst at Leica for the upgrades. Thankfully I never had the 'Shutter Fault' message which would seem to be more catastrophic. Some folks even had shutter blades getting damaged too (rare - a few in the archives here) but again, not something I suffered.
WarriorJazz Posted April 15, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted April 15, 2010 Since I still have a full warrenty I hope I'll get the upgrade for free. But mostly I hope to get my camera back soon. I use it every day when I travel to work. And I just bought a 35mm asph summicron so I really want to use it. Aarrgh the torture! I sold my m4-p to finance the m8 so i'm currently Leica-less. WarriorJazz Posted June 13, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted June 13, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) UPDATE - Just got my m8 back after almost 8 weeks! All works well! The shop could not tell me what Solms fixed and said that Leica does not always tell them what they actually did. I asked them to find out anyway since I'm really curious to find out what the problem was. Anyway, I'm enjoying my camera and I'll post Leica's reply to my question as soon as I get it. -Eelco
WarriorJazz Posted June 15, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted June 15, 2010 Update!!! I just got a reply from Leica (via the local shop) what they did to my M8: - clean display - adjust range finder - clean range finder - adjustment of all parts - cleaning and end control Just a CLA but nothing to fix the shutter fault error. BUT,... a small paragraph about the upcoming firmware update: "Attn.: Shutter fault in C-Mode" this is a bug inside the firmware and should be gone with the next firmware update. New firmware is being tested now and as soon as we have the ok, it will be available for download on our homepage." Great news and I can't wait untill its it available. -Eelco

lagrassa Posted June 16, 2010 Share #12 Posted June 16, 2010 M6 is mechanical precision. No electronics to go astray, save for the meter which can be done without. I hoping that it won't take as long as they say it will. Estimate for mine from NJ is 2-3 months. Shutter Fault, too. I bought myself a M6, I wanted one any way. Back to old school again. Was your M8 under warranty? My M8 is back at Solms at the moment for sensor problem and i was told it takes some 14 weeks (!!). Not sure if Leica would upgrade to M8u for me though, since I didn't request for it.

They do not do it if not explicty requested : WarrorJazz' report does not mention it (in the M8u top speed becomes 1/4000... it surely would have been quoted, if done) , though his camera was under warranty. gwelland Posted June 20, 2010 Share #15 Posted June 20, 2010 Shutter was a warranty fix. The upgrades I paid for - No Leica didn't give me $1100 in upgrades for free
Bluefairy Posted June 20, 2010 Share #16 Posted June 20, 2010 $1100 for the upgrade?! Oh ok .. let me think about it ... I am probably better off spending the money on lenses...
gwelland Posted June 20, 2010 Share #17 Posted June 20, 2010 $1100 for the upgrade?! Oh ok .. let me think about it ... I am probably better off spending the money on lenses... so how much did you think the various upgrades cost then? That's not the shutter upgrade btw, just framelines and crystal LCD cover. i had mine done a long time ago but a full set of upgrades was about $1700. If you're looking for an M8 today you're best off picking up a M8.2 or an already upgraded M8 from a financial point of view. IMHO.
