I apologize in advance if this is a question that has been asked and answered many times, but how does one use filters on leica lenses, in particular an ND filter. Many thanks for any tips.

You just screw them into the front in the vast majority of cases

lee filters makes a very compact but quite expensive rf-75 (rf=rangefinder, 75=75x75mm) filter system with 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 graduated nd filters best bought as a set otherwise you can buy a screw-in type nd filter if you want a a solid grad.

Please remember, a filter thru the process of filtering definitionally only takes away. It never adds anything. Never. This is an important first rule to remember with all types of filters in all situations: Color, B&W, polarizing,ND, etc. Considering what it is you are taking away often helps you better decide which to choose and often when not to use any at all.
