Any canadians? Sending M9 for realignment

Hi,

 

I have established that the rangefinder on my M9 needs realignment. I'm a bit nervous to try it myself, so I'd rather send it to Leica.

 

I'm in Canada and not sure how this process works. Do I contact my dealer ? or, should I get in touch with NJ or Solms?

 

Anyone with prior experience, please advise.

Either NJ or Solms represents an export of the camera from Canada, followed by a re-import of the repaired camera. This requires some extra documentation to avoid your having to pay duty or tax on the whole value of the camera when it comes back, instead of just on the price of the repairs. It's probably easiest to let your dealer handle these details.

 

In the US, I'd just give Leica in NJ a call. In Europe, customer service in Solms answers the phone and is helpful. But this is one of the things that dealers are in business to help with.

Is the Allendale number toll-free for you? If so, I'd call and ask customer service.

 

Scott is right about the export/re-import, but there are so many things between US and Canada that have special arrangements that it might be worth calling NJ anyway.

 

Okay, now you've got instructions from Israel and Texas. :cool: I'm sure the Canadians will be along any minute. :)

 

 

 

BTW, I applaud your sending in the camera. A lot of folks can apparently do a good job on their own rangefinders, but Leica doesn't recommend a field job. Just FWIW. ;)

When I sent a 75 Lux in recently, I just wrote on the customs slip that it was going for repair and return to Canada. The courier company that brought it back were instructed that it did not require duty to be paid on re-entry to Canada.

My day old M9 had trouble with the SD reader. I took it back to the dealer and they are handling everything. It has been sent to NJ Kindermann apparently don't do the M9, although I am going to have them do a CLA on my Cron in the interim. GIVE IT TO THE DEALER. That's what you paid 7000 plus for.

Kindermann won't do digital repairs to the M8 or M9; however, they've always been able to adjust a rangefinder optically--M8 or M9 included. Are you saying they will no longer do that?

 

Of course your dealer should take of you as well. I'm just used to having Gerry Smith look at my RF equipment.

Hmm .... that's interesting, i thought Kindermann no longer service Leica product since the dealership changed a couple of years ago, they are merely 20 minutes drive from my house.

Well, in truth I haven't needed to be there in the last year, but they've always helped me previously!

Gerry Smith and his team @ Kindemann are still very much active in servicing Leica gear.

 

I have serveral lenses that he worked on recently, as well as some sent down to Leica NJ through Kindermann.

 

To be clear if you want Gerry specifically to handle your Leica gear, know he is semi-retired, so it's best t call ahead to see when he is in and how swamped they are.
