ppolla Posted April 12, 2010 Share #1 Posted April 12, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Quick question.... Does anyone know of a good Leica authorised dealer of M system in Johannesburg? Going on the Leica website I only see Capetown location. Will be travelling to Johannesburg next week and wanted to visit the store...and maybe get some new things for my M9.... Please let me know. Advertisement Posted April 12, 2010 Posted April 12, 2010 Hi ppolla, Take a look here M9 + M system Leica AD in Johannesburg, South Africa. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Jelico Posted April 12, 2010 Share #2 Posted April 12, 2010 There used to be one dealer in Rosebank shopping mall, with limited stock. But that was many years ago I don't know do they still exist. Anyway Leica equipment in South Africa is much more expensive than in EU or USA, it will be cheaper to buy from online EU shops.
michali Posted April 12, 2010 Share #3 Posted April 12, 2010 There are several authorized Leica dealers in Johannesburg unfortunately they don't carry much stock. Tudor Photographic in Cape Town is the Leica distributor for SA. All the dealers get their stock from them. I've sent them emails requesting information on availability of lenses etc. and often I've never had the courtesy of a reply, so IMO you're wasting your time with them. I buy all of my Leica gear in Europe, you can find just about everything you need and it's much more efficient, easier and cheaper. The prices are also crazy in SA, an M9 was quoted at approx. $10, 000.00 last time I checked. This makes no sense to me at all as there's no import duty into SA on photographic equipment, all you pay is the local SA VAT which is 14% on the declared value of the item. So assuming you import an item from Europe you would not pay the European VAT approx. 19% to 20% (Germany, Austria & France) however you would pay the air freight and SA VAT which is 14%. So you're being ripped off! The long and the short of the story is don't bother with SA get what you need in Europe.
