How to use Folder Management

The manual's treatment of Folder Management is abbreviated and/or I just don't get it. I had the idea of creating a new folder for each location (a week in Oregon, a visit to Georgia). Seemed like an organized way to do things. So I created an Oregon folder and then the next week a Georgia folder. Now, however, I find many of the images that had been on the card aren't. And only a few which I had meant to be placed in the Georgia folder are remaining, and they're in the Oregon folder. The rest of a couple dozen images seem to have vanished.

 

How do you use Folder Management? When? And does it work for you? Or should I simply leave everything in one generic folder and let it go at that. Appreciate any/all guidance.

I think it's probably the easiest way.

+1 after recent experience. General advice is to a) use an application which organises images on your hard drive - i.e. a Digital Asset Management system (DAM). I use Lightroom. let the DAM organise your images by date - it's the easiest automatic process, c) use keywords to tag your images during ingestion. If you do these consistently, you need never lose and image in the maze of a filing structure...

Your question assumes that we know where you are setting up folders. It is extremely easy on any computer. Any DAM application is even more effective. If your memory card is the target, it must be camera specific. Can you enlighten us?

I think the mods have made a mistake. The OP's question related to the specifically _M9_ menue feature "Folder Mgmt". Would a mod please return this threat to the M9 forum.

 

I also am interested in how to use the M9 folder mgmt feature. I have read the manual without enlightenment and I also have experienced erratice results trying to use more than one folder. Therefore, I think Chris_tribble and wattsy's advice is sound -- to use only one folder on the card and sort images out in the computer.

 

However, like the OP, I would like to learn if anyone has figured out what the M9 folder mgmt feature could be good for. All I have found is that using the procedures for re-setting numbering by munging the sd card in my computer, I was unable to attain a folder setup such as: 101folderA and 102folderB each with an image L1010001 and L1020003 respectively. Once I set that up, the camera insisted on starting numbering from whatever was the highest number. That is, when I selected the 101folderA and took a snap, it was numbered L1020004. So apparently making separate folders doesn't affect the image numbering no matter how the folders are named.

 

Then I tried to just set up separate folders: 101folderA and 101folderB.

However, when I reformatted the card, and went to the menu > folder_mgmt > select, only one of the folders was listed for selection.

 

Any ideas what Leica had in mind as a use for the folder mgmt feature?

An interesting question, I would be curious to know the answer.

 

Currently, I use C1's ability to sequentially number and name files, at my direction, as it imports for me. Seems a sufficient method in my experience. I then ignore the names/numbers on the card.
