Mine's loose too and it's been back to Leica a couple of times (once for a rebuild when I dropped it - ouch!). Anyway, at this point I've just learned to live with it. Doesn't seem to affect the performance at all. For the record I prefer the 24/35 combo though have put the 28 on this morning to see what I get.

Agree, it doesn't seem to affect performance even when it's really pretty loose. And I'd also agree, the 24/35 combo gets my nod over the 28 as focal lengths. The 28 Cron on both M8 and M9 (the little I've used one) performs great though.

My experience was slightly different. I had a local lens repair shop tighten the front element on mine and I did find that I'd lost a little of the critical sharpness. It took pixel peeping to notice though. Not sure if it was due to de-centering the front element or what but I was concerned enough to send it to Leica to CLA and make sure it was like new.

I think the problem is a combination of things but most exacerbated by the lens hood.

On the M9, I found that the 28mm focal length wasn't one of my favorites for many of the reasons already stated - a little too wide, but not wide enough nor long enough for general use. I prefer the 35 and 24/21 focal lengths personally. On the M8 however it was almost ideal as my go anywhere lens.

so i assume that leica put it back in perfect order?

i wonder how many of the people who experience chronic loosening of the front assembly of the 28/2 also use the hood always, and vice versa, if there are people who don't have a problem with it coming loose, are you using the hood or not?

i use the hood on mine, and have a problem with screws coming loose (yeah, all over that one).

The 28 Cron ASPH is one of the few Leica lenses that I sold that I almost immediately bought back again :)

I had the 24 Elmarit ASPH and that is a terrific lens too. But on the M8 the 'cron has an extra stop and a wee bit better field of view for me.

On the M8 the 28 is a standout 35, and on the M9 it's a little different, but I still love it. It doesn't replace the 35 Lux for me, but it's the "go-to" wide for me when I shoot an 85 or 90 as well.

If I'm using 1 lens on M9 it's 35mm; but if I carry 2 lenses, 28 Summicron & a 50 are a perfect pair.

If you wear glasses, it's hard to see the M9's 28mm framelines; so I usually use an external viewfinder.

Another strong but subjective opinion: Don't compromise on 28 Elmarit Asph – it's painfully contrasty. Quickly sold it & bought Summicron, which is not as contrasty as other Leica aspherical lenses.

yes I used the hood all the time & yes it came back from Leica adjusted back to how it was when new.

Beware also that the hood comes apart too.
