felipe-m Posted April 5, 2010 Share #1 Posted April 5, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Leica stated they will not jump into the m4/3s wagon. So far they "kept word", by releasing a big sensor compact with APS-C that delivers good IQ if played to its stengths. But... If Leica were to come up with an interchangeable-lens X2, with a small lens line-up that would juuuust so happen to be nicely compatible (via adapter) with m4/3s cameras, wouldn't that be an extra drive of leica lens sales, given the m4/3s success? (not to mention the possibly increased appeal of the X itself...) The opposite could be true off course, but the m4/3s market is bigger... The difference would not be as big as with M lenses, allowing for better optical compatibility and decent wide angles. Also, Panny has already released a m4/3s lens with Leica's design, so the R&D would already be mostly there... Just a bit of fun speculation... Any thoughts? jsrockit Posted April 6, 2010 Share #2 Posted April 6, 2010 I think everyone would have an accident in their pants if Leica made an X2 with interchangeable lenses that had proper focusing capabilities. Well, a few people around would still find something to hate. At this point, Leica should not make anything that isn't full frame. The X1 should be their last camera that isn't. Yes, I agreed and I am with you. I will prefer full frame. Just imagine, if every thing the same like X1, except full frame, manual focus ring and aperture ring in on the lens. It would be wonderful. felipe-m Posted April 6, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted April 6, 2010 I think everyone would have an accident in theirs pants if Leica made an X2 with interchangeable lenses that had proper focusing capabilities. yeah, my wallet would be defenseless! At this point, Leica should not make anything that isn't full frame. The X1 should be their last camera that isn't. A succesor with a FF sensor? Nice, but very unlikely, and difficult to keep it coat-pocketable that way...
jsrockit Posted April 6, 2010 Share #5 Posted April 6, 2010 A succesor with a FF sensor? Nice, but very unlikely, and difficult to keep it coat-pocketable that way... We'll see... Rollei made the Rollei 35 when people thought that wasn't possible. The X1 isn't truly coat pocketable anyway... it still sticks out in an awkward way. A sucessor won't be out for 2 or more years... by that point, there is no sense messing with anything less.
felipe-m Posted April 6, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted April 6, 2010 The X1 isn't truly coat pocketable anyway... it still sticks out in an awkward way. My coat must have bigger pockets than yours then, or maybe they are emptier I tried it and it fit very nicely, but the single focal length for that much money did put me off. It was also generally a bit too slow and the "thumb focus" option just didn't do it for me. A sucessor won't be out for 2 or more years... Hopefully less than 2 years, but realistically I'd have to agree. And if the electronics are also much improved, then it would be very hard to ignore... I'm a user and while it fits in a coat pocket, it is just a little too awkward for my tastes; I'd rather it be around my neck or shoulder. It is super light for what it is, so I don't even notice it around my neck (until I bend down and it almost slips off my bald head). I'm used to the slowness now, but I can't use the manual focus option either. That dial takes forever to turn to get something in focus.
felipe-m Posted April 7, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted April 7, 2010 ...so I don't even notice it around my neck (until I bend down and it almost slips off my bald head). they key word there being "almost", hope you don't end-up performing an involuntary sturdiness check... ... but I can't use the manual focus option either. That dial takes forever to turn to get something in focus. Yep, had the exact same impression. As much as I find the design gorgeous and want to like the camera, I would need more verstility to justify the ca. 1.6K Euros. So I hope Leica sees a benefit in developing an I.C. lens version, and the m4/3s market may be an additional incentive.

felipe-m Posted April 8, 2010 Author Share #10 Posted April 8, 2010 What do you use now feline-m? SLRs, and a D-Lux 4 as my "pants pocketable" But would like a versatile and high IQ "coat pocketable" one, "just" like the X1, but faster in all respects and with I.C. lenses... And regarding the thread's topic, Samsung recently anounced the NX10, with an APS-C sensor and I.C. lenses... Not yet the highest IQ performer it seems, but there is clear interest on that front (big sensor mirrorless compacts) from several sides including m4/3s, but is not yet clogged by the big 3 companies... A good opportunity for Leica? The market for such hypothetical X-system lenses really does seem to be growing,
