dkCambridgeshire Posted April 12, 2010 Share #22 Posted April 12, 2010 Peeling vulcanite appears to be a very significant X1 problem according to the number of complaints posted on this forum. I hope Leica is getting the necessary feedback about this and is taking steps to prevent it happening in future. I wonder where the vulcanite is being applied ie in which factory? ... And if it is maybe cut from a roll of self adhesive material? dunk
pvak Posted April 12, 2010 Share #23 Posted April 12, 2010 Using a Luigi half case or ever ready case may prevent the problem by covering the camera while it is being used. Unfortunately not! I have been using the bottom of the ever ready case from day one and it has not prevented the peeling which seems to occur around the edges of the most curved surfaces on the back. jsrockit Posted April 12, 2010 Share #24 Posted April 12, 2010 Still no peeling on mine. It must be a specific serial number group... (knock on wood).
Guest stnami Posted April 13, 2010 Share #25 Posted April 13, 2010 in future get a japanese made or China made camera. They are more reliable. The Germans are losing their touch. Had a choice between a German made Karcher or the Chinese version........ bought the Chinese version as it was a superior product both in quality and performance

pappde Posted April 13, 2010 Author Share #28 Posted April 13, 2010 So I got a package today from Leica USA. It was a brand new X1. Instead of fixing my old camera and sending it back they took one straight out of the fancy packaging and sent me the camera in its inner box with wrapper intact on it. It has a serial number with about three thousand higher than my "old" one had. Other than that it is the same. I live in the USA for over twenty five years nom and some things still amazes me. Like that it is cheaper and easier for Leica USA just send a spank new camera out of its package, instead of fixing the old one. To repair the problem did not need major disassembly or delicate work, just peel off the old sticky and replace with a new one. Even I could have done it, would I have access to a new set of "skins". Well no complaint here, I have a new camera, my "old" one was pretty well scratched up when I tried to separate two angry dogs and during that, unbeknown to me I dragged my X1 on gravel, that left some deep dings on the bottom pane and some damage to the screen. Although these were purely aesthetic I was fairly pissed about them and the dogs. I guess I can not blame the dogs, they know squat about photography and sure do not give a damn about a Leica or any other camera for that matter. Tao Posted April 13, 2010 Share #29 Posted April 13, 2010 "So I got a package today from Leica USA." Good for you; a very prudent gesture on the part of Leica. Did you originally send the camera back to Leica USA or to Germany?

2045 Posted April 14, 2010 Share #32 Posted April 14, 2010 I sent my X1 for repairs today. I have three issues:- skin is peeling loose - battery door doesn't close properly when the battery is inserted and the worst: - the connection for the neckstrap has come loose on one side. Hopefully it will be back soon as I am doing a photograpy course and am going on a holiday in three weeks... Jan Martijn Jan, i just got mine & notice the same on the battery door problem u described above. do u mean the edge of the door gets lifted a little that i can see it from the side? janmartm Posted April 14, 2010 Share #33 Posted April 14, 2010 Jan,i just got mine & notice the same on the battery door problem u described above. do u mean the edge of the door gets lifted a little that i can see it from the side? Exactly. Since I had to send it in for fixing the connector for the strap, I decide to have that fixed too. When using the handgrip it's not a problem as the battery door is covered by the base of the grip.
2045 Posted April 14, 2010 Share #34 Posted April 14, 2010 i hear ya, but i found that unacceptable justify how much it costs & ''made in Germany.'' i wonder if others have the same problem or maybe i'm just too anal? lol.
Tao Posted April 14, 2010 Share #35 Posted April 14, 2010 Nothing "anal" about expecting quality for 2K! No excuse for that getting past QC. My 15" MacBook Pro cost less, and it's built like a tank.
2045 Posted April 14, 2010 Share #36 Posted April 14, 2010 i agree on the MacBookPro comment. it's beautifully built... from China. joke aside, here's a pic i found online. not my pic but mine is a little worse than this. notice what i circle in red. can people confirm that it's a common flaw? Tao Posted April 14, 2010 Share #37 Posted April 14, 2010 Well, it's somewhat slight, yet large enough to allow moisture, dust, pollen, etc to enter the compartment. Either the metal itself, or the hinge must be flimsy. I'm sure you are frustrated. But thanks for sharing.
pappde Posted April 14, 2010 Author Share #38 Posted April 14, 2010 Yes I have the same issue with both of the X1s I had so far. This "overhang" happens only when a battery is in place. When the battery is removed the door is flush with the bottom plate. I do believe this is a design flaw. On my first X1 - the one I sent back for the "skin"peelig - I tried to solve this problem with removing the spring that is on the bottom of the battery holder and see wheter it makes a difference, but it did not. The force of the three connectors is enough to push the door up. I think the latch design is not good, it should be a little off center so it opposes the force of the springs better. Tao Posted April 15, 2010 Share #39 Posted April 15, 2010 As much as I love the concept, apparent IQ and simplicity of the X1, it means little when the execution of said concept fails to measure up to such lofty aspirations due to build and QC issues. Considering that the X1 has as yet to really hit the US market - Europe? - it will be interesting to see how this plays out. I, for one, have become pessimistic enough to cancel my order with Amazon and to remove my name of another waiting list. This really sucks, because the X1 is head and shoulders above all other cameras with regards to ergonomic usability.

Mine is the same with regard to the battery door. I does not, however, show an open space into the chamber itself for dust, etc. Of all the X1'ers on here, do some of yours - not - have this problem, or is it endemic to all of them? Does not bother me that much, and b/c it took forever to get the thing, I hate to send it back... Otherwise, love the camera.
