msbel Posted April 14, 2010 Share #21 Â Posted April 14, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) From the pics in this thread, looks like the lens fully extended is flush with the hood. Does that really protect the lens? Â Maybe it's just the photo or their is another purpose to use it (losing the orig. cap or whatever.)

ezc203 Posted April 14, 2010 Share #22 Â Posted April 14, 2010 From the front, the hood doesn't provide much protection, but what it does is protect the barrel of the lens from damages from the side.
ericperlberg Posted April 14, 2010 Author Share #23 Â Posted April 14, 2010 From the pics in this thread, looks like the lens fully extended is flush with the hood. Does that really protect the lens? Â Maybe it's just the photo or their is another purpose to use it (losing the orig. cap or whatever.) Â I'm not sure you're really getting the gist of this. Have you read the first post in the thread? Â Yes, you're right. When extended the lens hood does nothing to protect the lens, that's irrelevant. This is a solution to a different problem. Â Without this lens hood solution, once you've turned off the camera and you go to put it in a bag you'll need to put a lens cap on the lens to protect it OR as in the case of using the Summarit lens hood shown the lens retracts deep into the Summarit lens hood thus protecting it without a cap when the camera is off and in your bag. With the Summarit lens hood solution you don't need to use the lens cap which came with the camera. Â As mentioned at the top of the thread using a lens cap means you have to take the cap off when you do turn on the camera and then you have to either hold the lens cap in your hand or put it in a pocket or do something with it when you're shooting which is a hassle and clumbsy for some of us. It may not be a big deal for you in which case you don't need this solution but if you find yourself needlessly holding on to a lens cap while trying to shoot AND you want to protect the lens in your bag AND you want to get to shooting without having to remove the lens cap first then you'll appreciate that this eliminates that set of problems. I can see the value for your purposes. Certainly is a pain the *** to have to take the cap off to use the shoot settings.  By the same token, as with the cap, seems you would have to turn the camera off every time to retract the lens before putting it back in your bag to prevent the lens getting rubbed yes?  I carry the thing in my sweatshirt pocket and palm it. kapoamos Posted January 18, 2011 Share #25  Posted January 18, 2011 New Metal 46mm Screw-in Standard Lens Hood + Cap E46 on eBay (end time 06-May-10 22:54:15 BST) You could try this combination of hood and lens cap. A 'wide angle' hood and cap is also available   Steve  So the 46mm Screw-in Standard Lens Hood + Cap won't work on the X1?   Beside 75mm summarit Lens Hood, any other option?
