Bill,

Terrific shot. Floating dancers. Nice illumination.

Would fit in http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/other/120326-barnacks-monthly-april-back-light-theme.html

Thanks for posting, K-H.

K-H, thanks for the suggestion, I posted the pix in the Barnacks thread, with a reference to the pun on light.

I am working on this shot to bring out some separation. The (stage) lighting was fierce so I have to figure out how to bring up the dancer at the right while not blowing out the one at the upper center.

Regards,

Bill,

Thanks. That's a challenge. The control point functionality in Nikon's Capture NX2 might be well suited for this specific task.

I am not aware that this particular feature is available in other software. Probably just showing my ignorance.

Regards, K-H.

Nik Software's Viveza should do the job.

Supposing it is a dng file process the photograph twice, once for the main areas, and again just for the difficult bits bringing up the shadows etc, then auto merge the two versions in Photoshop or Photomatix? You may even manage it really quickly with the same idea but using copy and paste (very old tech).

I've done plenty of shooting with a tripod and always keep one in my car for those times when I need it and hand held won't do.

Ditto.

I have always used an M for landscape photography. It's especially useful in the mountains or on long hikes where larger cameras are just too heavy and where there is a premium on subtle detail. In film days I used Kodachrome with an M2 and two lenses. Better than my 2 1/4 for color because Kodachrome II and 25 weren't available in that format.

My M8 (soon to be 9) is my most competent landscape camera; and living, as I do, in San Francisco, there is plenty of landscape to photograph. The 75mm is also a very competent close-up lens.

Viveza looks very interesting. I'll check it out further. tnx.

There is an article in the latest edition of LFI on Viveza which you might find useful. Page 54.

Tnx. I will take a look. I think I passed it over, not knowing that it could be useful for these purposes. On their site, they discuss an application that is similar to mine, that is, a dark area that gets lightened.

After all the manipulation, I may just crop the damn pic.
