Hi,

Would like your advise based on your own experience on usefull densities for ND filter(s).

It's intended use is in the mediterranean area during late sprin and summer. Camera M9, lenses lux, cron and elmarit.

Looking forward to your reply.

Luuk.

"Sunny 16" - exposure in bright sunlight at ISO 160 is about 1/160s at f/16.

In exceptionally bright surroundings, say 1/250 at f/16 ... or 1/4000 at f/3.1.

A ND filter with density 0.6 reduces the light by two stops (4x) ... 1/4000 at f/1.5 ... or 1/40 at f/11 if you want a little motion blur

... or with density 0.9 reduces by three stops (8x) ... 1/4000 at f/1.1.

So: ND 0.6 or 0.9 if you want to use your Summilux wide open in bright sunlight.

If you want wide aperture and motion blur, ND 2.0 or darker.

I use ND 0.6 on both my 1.4 and 1.2 lenses. The two stops reduction is enough at ISO160 (or even Pull 80) and 1/4000 to shoot wide open in bright light. Also, it allows not to lose too much light in case of finding yourself suddenly in shadows or reduced light.

Today I was shooting bright sun and found that 1/4000 kicked in between 4.0 and 5.6. So I would think about a 4x ND filter. That is what I am ordering right now.
