kiteland Posted April 2, 2010 Share #1 Posted April 2, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a situation where intermittently my M8 will not display lens data in the exif (or when viewed on the camera screen). I have also had one situation where I was using my 28 Elmarit and the exif was showing a 50mm lens? Removing battery and cleaning the code reader sensor and lens sometimes clears the problem but more often than not it does not. The problem seems to be getting worse. The body is very clean and hasn’t been used in any dusty environments. Interestingly I can have a lens that isn’t being read, put on a one that is and then swap back to the original only to find that the lens “reading” stops again. I haven’t looked at this systematically but it would suggest to me that perhaps one element of the 6bit code reader is failing? All of my lenses are factory coded – no sharpie pens here The body is still well within its 2 year passport so I know Leica will sort – but still grateful for any suggestions before its goes in? Anyone seen this before? Thanks in advance
Advertisement Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 Hi kiteland, Take a look here Wrong or no lens data in Exif. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ho_co Posted April 3, 2010 Share #2 Posted April 3, 2010 A number of us find that a given lens is sometimes recognized, sometimes not. There have been several threads in that regard. In my case, the lens in question most often fails to be recognized for several shots after I mount it; then the camera often begins recognizing it, but not always. I don't know the explanation, and I'm unaware that anyone has bothered to send the body or lens to Leica for the problem. As to the question of "the problem seems to be getting worse," I think that's new. I'm aware of one person whose (M9) lens sensor wasn't working at purchase, but not of any cases where sensor performance deteriorated. Good luck getting it sorted! And keep us posted! kiteland Posted April 3, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted April 3, 2010 Many thanks. Much appreciated. I'll report back.
kiteland Posted April 3, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted April 3, 2010 Interestingly, having now read some of the other threads, if I leave the lens on and continue to take shots after 10-15 shots the camera starts to “read” the lens again. I guess this is a FW “issue” as others have said elsewhere?
zeitz Posted April 3, 2010 Share #5 Posted April 3, 2010 I don't think this is a firmware issue. Is your lens clicking into position properly? Does it twist in the mount at all even when the release tab is not being pushed?
kiteland Posted April 3, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted April 3, 2010 Yes all 4 lenses are firmly mounted when it happens. As I said it sometime happens and then corrects itself without the lens being removed. My first thought was dust/dirt on the reader and/or lens code but both are clean. Happy to hear any suggest causes. Just got back from a local park and 60 photos later all have correct lens data showing.
kiteland Posted April 7, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted April 7, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Spoke to Leica and they would like the camera returned. Bit of a pain - but best to get it sorted while it is still in warranty.
kiteland Posted April 29, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted April 29, 2010 Well had the call to say the camera is on its way back to the UK - no advice on what has been done to it, but fingers crossed all is well with the fix. I've missed it
