Clandrel Posted April 1, 2010 Share #1 Posted April 1, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Here is a short story, that I never thought I would be the one to tell. At least not yet:) I bought an M8 in december. Got fascinated by the rangefinder way of taking pictures. Bought it with a 24mm Elmarit ASPH. I loved it! Then I went out and bought a 50mm summilux ASPH and a 90mm Elmarit plus plus... After a while I thought, what I'm I doing? Buying camera equipment for more money than a car costs. I must be crazy. Then my brother in law talkes me into buying a D700 with a few lenses. I'm thinking, why not get a full frame, which is more an allrounder than the M8, and costs much less than Leica. So I go for it. Sold all my Leica stuff, got the D700, a 35, a 24-70... That is a month ago. Now, the D700 is a very fine camera indeed. I spent a lot of time with it, and really liked it. Fast forward a month. I'm going into my local shop to get an extra battery for my D700. And there, on the shelf, a brand new black M9 looking at me, and I'm looking at her. Jesus, I thought. I wanted it so badly. The SA took it out, handed it to me, and I was sold. Or better, the M9 was sold:) So, I'm back with an M9 and a 35mm Summicron ASPH Black paint and I'm so happy! I knew there was something missing, and as it turns out, it's the world of Leica. I made it clear to myself that I only want to get one lense. And it's all I can afford anyways. Now, when I have mastered the camera with one lense, I might get another. Anyways, what are your thoughts on the black paint version? I really like it. It's heavy, but oozes of quality and is razor sharp. It doesn't actually match the M9 (cause it's gloss) but it looks really cool. I must say the lense is one of my favourites. It's so sharp, great bokeh and it's really small and comfortable. Anyways, just wanted to tell you my crazy Leica story and apologize for leaving! I'm back baby! And it feels great! ho_co Posted April 1, 2010 Share #3 Posted April 1, 2010 Good story! A lot of us can sympathize because we've done or almost done the same. Mine is the opposite side. I went to Leica many years back, but every once in a while I feel like getting another lens for my dSLR. The only trouble is, I prefer the rangefinder. It's always the camera I pick up unless there's something specific I need from the Nikon. Sure, I'd find the dSLR more versatile if I gave it another lens, but once the newness wears off (and that doesn't take long), I just leave its bag home and carry the Leica pack. barcoder Posted April 2, 2010 Share #6 Posted April 2, 2010 I only wish I had learned of Leica a few years ago. I bought an SLR first and liked it, but it was too big and bulky with too many features and functions I had to set before I even made a picture. For me, instead of enabling me to make pictures, the SLR was the most encumbering thing in the process of making pictures. I tried the micro 4/3 thing too. Found it equally encumbering. Borrowed a coworkers M3 and found how much fun it was to use. Now I am waiting to get my M9.

Anguish Posted April 3, 2010 Share #8 Posted April 3, 2010 I'm 56 and regret that I didn't take every picture in my 40 years of shooting through Leica glass.

scc Posted April 3, 2010 Share #10 Posted April 3, 2010 I have an M9 and my trusty black paint Summicron 35 ASPH. The gloss has worn down slowly, some brassing is starting to develop now. I replaced the metal hood with regular plastic rectangular one. It is a perfect lens for the M9, super-smooth to focus, and I think it matches up to the M9 just fine. I have 3 lenses (24,35,50) and the 35 is the one that is on my camera 90% of the time. I also have the 50 Summilux black paint, both of my BP lenses were bought almost 10 years ago now, and I've had them both 6 bit coded. They go nicely with my M6 TTL LHSA too. I love the GH1 viewfinder, and with a 35 Summicron ASPH plugged into the front, its a lot of fun.
