Hello,

I have a quick question about identifying a Summaron. Can one know with certainty from the serial number whether the lens is an "M2" version or an "M3/goggles" version? Does 1662xxx give enough information to know which version lens should be?

thanks,

RJ

Well, according to one of the many serial number websites, LeicaLenses serial number and production year - Leica Objektiv Serienummer it was made in 1959. That doesn't narrow it down at all, as both M3s and M2s were made in 1959

If it's an M3 with goggles version, it will be obvious, but the M2 versions are much rarer as they have the amended cam in the mount to bring up the 35mm frame on the M2.

I have had two f2.8 Summarons and a f3.5 version in my time. Neither of the f2.8s were M2 versions, but it doesn't actually matter much, as the 35mm frame virtually fills the whole viuewfinder in an M2 anyway.

A clean f2.8 Summaron is one of those Leica lenses that performs way, way above the small amount of money that it costs.

Definitely no.

All you find in published sources is that No. 1662.001 to 1668.000 were 2.8/35 Summarons from 1959 - a part of them with and the other without goggles.

Hi John,

It's an item for sale from a dealer who does not have quick access to the item for inspection. It is in storage and ships from a different center than their customer service place. The description neglected to specify M2 or M3 version, and this had both me and the representative at the dealer stumped. We both hoped the answer could be solved with the serial number.

Are these production figures you are giving? Do you have blocks of serial numbers dedicated to those production figures?
