ballyscanlon Posted April 1, 2010 Share #1 Posted April 1, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) hello. i have read the manual and know how to save a collection of settings as a user profile. but i have noticed from time to time i slip into "snap shot", or "-" (no profile at all). when does one need to set ones profile? after replacing battery? all things being equal, should it just stay there? or am i possibly falling out of it by something i am doing? as an extension of this, if i make some custom menu choices and do not save as a profile, do i lose everything once i take out the battery? or turn it off for that matter? thanks in advance. Advertisement Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 Hi ballyscanlon, Take a look here user profiles an the M9. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
digitalfx Posted April 1, 2010 Share #2 Posted April 1, 2010 Snap shot mode is not the same as "no setting at all". When you are using a profile, and change any parameter like say iso your camera will no longer be in that profile. It will retain all the settings of that profile except what you changed. This is very different from snapshot mode.
ho_co Posted April 1, 2010 Share #3 Posted April 1, 2010 John-- There are all sorts of reasons to set a profile, but it's a matter of choice. I use one profile for 'general' with ISO Auto and another for 'tripod' with ISO 160, for example, with AWB and DNG in both cases. Some folks don't use Auto White Balance, and set up profiles with manual settings for, say, daylight, tungsten, and energy-saving bulbs. Do you find yourself repeatedly making the same settings? If so, those settings might be a good candidate for a user profile. Profiles are normally erased by doing a firmware update, and when/if a camera completely depletes its power supply (and internal backup power supply). Hope that helps. digitalfx Posted April 1, 2010 Share #4 Posted April 1, 2010 I think he is simply changing iso and his profile is blank in the menu. Your profile is still there, it just doesnt display because you changed a parameter. Profiles stay thru battery changes.

ho_co Posted April 1, 2010 Share #7 Posted April 1, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Bravo, John! FWIW, the note to that effect is at the upper right of page 149 of the manual, or of "page 63 / 92" in the PDF: Of course, the explanation is properly terse and easier to understand after you've discovered it yourself. And thanks, digitalfx. I hadn't understood the question, as you realized.
