potratz Posted March 31, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 31, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sorry if this has been asked but I am curious since I am going back and forth between Aperture 3 and Lightroom. The only reason "I think" I don't jump to Aperture 3 much more is lack of Nik Software plugins. So which are you using Aperture 3 or LR...even though you received LR for free? winmore Posted March 31, 2010 Share #2 Posted March 31, 2010 I am using Aperture 3 with Nik plug-ins. The only issue is that Aperture re-opens in 32-bit mode to accord with the bit depth of the Nik modules. Nonetheless the speed of processing and the results seem fine to me. Cheers Ron
Walt Calahan Posted March 31, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 31, 2010 Just got Aperture 3. Waiting for Lightroom 3 (non-beta). So far I'm not doing handsprings over either. Usually fallback to using Bridge and Photoshop.

Nonetheless the speed of processing and the results seem fine to me.Cheers Ron You can force Aperture to open originally and stay in 32-bit mode so you don't get that switching issue. At this point I haven't found a compelling reason to need 64-bit mode on my Mac Pro, even though I have a Radeon HD 4870 which I think is compatible with the higher bit mode. Select Aperture in Finder - "Get Info" (Cmd-I) - select "Open in 32-bit mode" in the "General" section.

That is what is says on their website and when I try to edit it does not see the plugins. Please advise. Thanks
silverlight99 Posted March 31, 2010 Share #6 Posted March 31, 2010 I did a reinstall of the NIK software and works fine with Aperture3 (just have to run in 32bit per above comments). I still find myself leaning towards Lightroom 3 Beta as my go-to though. I don't remember which of the adjustments I preferred, but the exposure adj was quite different between the two programs and was just used to LR. Ario Arioldi Posted March 31, 2010 Share #8 Posted March 31, 2010 I have tested Aperure3 for some time, but now I'm back to LR. Cheers, Ario
yanidel Posted March 31, 2010 Share #9 Posted March 31, 2010 LR3, great improvement over LR2 in IQ. I also appreciate a lot thw fact that it acts as a library for all my pictures. It is a do it all in one software.
ianman Posted March 31, 2010 Share #10 Posted March 31, 2010 I'm using Aperture 3, but I will give LR 3 another go when it's finally released. AFAIK, Nik plugins work fine with Aperture 3, I tested a couple of them and as ready to buy, but then I saw that prices in the EU are twice as much as in the US so decided I can live without them until my next trip across the pond. sanyasi Posted March 31, 2010 Share #16 Posted March 31, 2010 I use Lightroom, but also bought Aperture when I bought my Mac. I suspect that it is more a question of what you learn on rather than one being better than the other. Having spent a lot of time with Lightroom, I found Aperture to be inadequate, but I suspect that is more because I had a workflow in Lightroom so I didn't want to learn where everything is in Aperture. For me, Lightroom has a slight edge because Adobe made its name in image software so I suspect they have more expertise with photos, but at the end of the day, you are going to have a learning curve either way no matter how intuitive people say one program is as opposed to another. neli Posted March 31, 2010 Share #17 Posted March 31, 2010 aperture 3, all excellent, except custom print sizes for contact sheets are a hassle. still defaults to 8.5" x 11". brushes are excellent, library management is much improved especially being able to merge libraries. import much much better, and the interface takes a lot less space than LR2 or 3. and it has that mac feel :-)
swamiji Posted March 31, 2010 Share #18 Posted March 31, 2010 Aperture 3 with Nik plug-ins. I am not comfortable with LR. Tried C1, but it's output is limited.
LondonM Posted March 31, 2010 Share #19 Posted March 31, 2010 Aperture 3. But I'm just starting with this raw processing game, much as I started developing rolls of 120 from my Rolleiflex in the very early 70's. I am a Mac user since 1986, and that probably has something to do with it too.
chrism Posted March 31, 2010 Share #20 Posted March 31, 2010 I am also a Mac user, but find Aperture unusable, and stick to LR/PS. Chris
