Advertisement Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Hi MikeyM, Take a look here Leica USA: Only 5% of sales are ‘film’ cameras. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Pangur Ban Posted March 30, 2010 Share #2 Posted March 30, 2010 I'm pleasantly surprised it's that high a proportion - especially considering the number of the smaller digital cameras they must sell as well as the dRFs
Jager Posted March 30, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 30, 2010 One just hopes that the percentage, as low as it is, remains high enough that Leica continues to manufacture them. I love my M9 to the moon, but I still want to buy that MP someday.
adan Posted March 30, 2010 Share #4 Posted March 30, 2010 At least the Leica UK spokesperson is a bit more specific than Roger Horn (USA) was: Film cameras are 6% of Leica M cameras sold in the UK. So he's talking units, not revenue, and within the M line, not including compacts and the S line.
tdtaylor Posted March 30, 2010 Share #5 Posted March 30, 2010 Just to note: Nikon, 3rd Quarter (I believe Oct-Jan): DLSR Sales: 1.2 million units P & S: 4.1 million US 34% of Units= 1.8 million units in US for Nikon 5% of 1.8 million is 90,100 units. If Leica only makes 10k per month, that is only 30k. Maybe it is only DSLRs. 1.2 m@ 34% to US (assumption) @5% of market= 20.4k per quarter. This sort of makes more sense if they are making 10k per month (at least some months), until you note this is only Nikon, and does not include, Canon, Sony, Panasonic, etc.
colin_d Posted March 31, 2010 Share #6 Posted March 31, 2010 You would expect that the majority of film cameras produced now are only at the quality end of the market. It would be interesting to see exactly what the 5% or 6% is made up of. I went back to film because digital did not give me the same inherent satisfaction that I get from transparencies.
