robert-gregory Posted March 30, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 30, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've noticed that I'm having a bit of a problem getting critical focus with my M9. It just doesn't seem to be as clear and 'snap' into focus as I'm used to. This is not a 'personal problem' (eyes, no problems before) or 'experience problem' using a rangefinder - I've been using a Leica M for a few decades. And compared for example with my M4, the M4 is absolutely no problem and is much clearer as far as using the rangefinder patch. Example: Last night I just couldn't see clearly the focus lining up. So I picked a pin point light to see how the rangefinder would worked. What I got was two fuzzy star-like double images to line up. I thought the vertical alinement may be off, but this is not the case, both images seem 'smeared', almost 'star-like' and not the pin point light that I'm looking at. Again, the M4 had no problem in making a sharp defined image in the finder/rangefinder the way it should be. And to add confusion, I pulled out one of my MPs, a new to me used .85 version (the other is in for a tune-up so can't check with it) and it does the same thing as the M9. And although its suppose to make things easier to see, adding a 1.25x Leica magnifier to the M9 doesn't help at all, if anything it seems to just 'magnify' the problem. Does this have to do with how the modern finder is put together compared to an older M-series? Modern finder coatings do make the finder brighter, but shouldn't add reflections? The M9 will be going into Leica with lenses for an adjustment at some time, and I'll have them look at this problem, but is this something inherit in the camera, or am I just going crazy? Advertisement Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Hi robert-gregory, Take a look here M9 critical focus rangefinder problems. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Shade Posted March 30, 2010 Share #2 Posted March 30, 2010 Robert, my finder on my M9 seems to be snappy and clear. Although I admit there are times against bright lights I'd have some trouble. But - I never had any "smeared" visions.. Perhaps something is not aligned correctly?
robert-gregory Posted March 30, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted March 30, 2010 I think smeared wasn't the best wording. Its more a doubling of the light source (looks like what would be a vertical alinement problem if its wasn't in both the finder and rangefinder image) and star-like flare. Realistically I'm not focusing on fine light points usually, but its a surprise to see this, especially with the M4 being so clear. Its not as bad as maybe I make it out to be. Daytime or good light its fine, but in low light there are more misses. Need to pick my focus points more carefully, and maybe once I get these lenses calibrated to the camera it will seem a secondary issue. I'm out doing some chart testing to see how my lenses are doing before I send them in. Seems I have a front focus issue in general.
jaapv Posted March 30, 2010 Share #4 Posted March 30, 2010 The RF windows get finger grease on them very easily, maybe due to the coating..
robert-gregory Posted March 31, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted March 31, 2010 Wish it was as simple as a finder glass cleaning, its with both the finder and secondary rangefinder image, so must be internal. Something just seem 'off'. Never an issue with my film based Ms, I'll have Leica look at it when the camera and lenses go in for adjustment.
potratz Posted March 31, 2010 Share #6 Posted March 31, 2010 Robert, I have had the same issue and it is like the viewfinder is smeared or ghosting really bad and when I say ghosting it just seems like a blur of light where I cant focus at all. I thought it was just me. I don't see how this would make a difference but I just took another picture shut the camera off changed position/angle and it seemed to do better. My viewfinder glass was clean also so have no thought of why except maybe some Gremlins took my camera over for a moment.
furcafe Posted April 7, 2010 Share #7 Posted April 7, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) FWIW, I've only had my M9 for a couple days now, but my use so far has been almost exclusively in available darkness & (poor) club lighting conditions & while I haven't experienced ghosting, the RF patch does seem to be dimmer & less contrasty than my M6 TTL (0.85) & M7 (0.72), even though both of those had the MP-type upgrade, & the M8, too. It is definitely more susceptible to flaring out if my eye goes a bit off-center than the M8, similar to the pre-upgraded M6 TTL & M7.
