Just got LFI and notice that Noah Addis was in the top 3 prizewinners in the 35mm competition using the M9 - with a lovely photo! This means he, is now, or soon will be the proud owner of a Leica X1.

First, Noah - many congratulations for well deserved recognition of the quality of your work. Second - I'll be really interested to hear what you think about the X1 (should we be checking eBay? :D)

Thanks everyone. I was honored to have made the top three, just found out the other day but I haven't received my magazine (or the X1) yet!

The X1 should make a nice backup/vacation snapshot camera or something to carry along when shooting with film. I'll definitely post some thoughts about it.

Congrats Noah! I received my LFI in Tokyo yesterday and was happy to see your pictures among the top 3. I am sure you will use your X1 to good use. AF is a little slow but high ISO is very good and you will be able to work it well to your style.

Let me know if you are ever around Tokyo,

Arif

Hi Noah, I have been running a little competition with some of my friends as to who the winners would be, and FWIW your photo was in my selection. Lovely shot, full of human feeling and respect. Well done.

Hi Noah,

To be truthful, I actually prefer your # 3 to both #2 and #1.

Yes, I agree. IMO Noah's photograph and the KKK one are the best of the bunch shown. The winner was a bit too 'Salgado-lite' for my taste.

Incidentally, Nick de Marco, another forum member (I assume it is he) has a feature in the next edition of LFI. I think they are showing his photos from Cuba (a subject that LFI and Leica seem to be a bit obsessed about lately) so congratulations to him.

Great that Nick's work has been acknowledged - though also a tad ironic as he seems to spend a lot of time posting in praise of Panasonic...

Yes Congratulations to Noah and all the other winners.

It was a very exciting competition and many of the works that participated were very good indeed.

It has been a pleasure to follow it (and participate in it as well).

And because of the high expectations that I developed seeing the great work that participated, I find a bit disappointing, and I don't mean to detract anything form the winners, the fact that all the winning images are almost identical in their style, nine out of ten are black and white, and could have easily been shot by the same person.

Surely if this competition was meant to show the breath of work that can be made with a 35mm lens, it could have chosen other images that were, IMHO just as beautiful and far more diverse in style, subject matter and feel.

Am I the only one that feels this way?

Again congratulations to the winners, their work is great and deserved to win.

Yes. Though more relative to shot locations, the commonality of top 100 shots is a point that was raised and debated here.

But let's keep that thread in honour of Noah's great achievement !

Thanks for pointing to that thread which I had missed... very interesting discussion but not quite making my point here.

I think the vast material that participated in this competition did contain a huge variation of styles, subjects and moods, none of which are to be seen in the final selection.

Certainly a particular location can offer a particular look, but heck! I can take pictures in my kitchen and still come up with something particular, so I think that "exotic location" as an excuse, is not enough to explain why the chosen ten are so similar.
