Please can you tell me, do you prefer 18mm or 24mm on the M9?

Thanks.

Lucy

I have them both - 18, 24 (and 35)

I love them both - the 18mm gives some really unique images - so I guess it's style

I wouldn't give either one up,,

I do not think these are really comparable on the M9. You can still do portraits with 24mm but with the 18mm that would be stretching it (literally). The 18mm is an ultra wide angle that gives some crazy vistas but also needs to be handled carefully to avoid too much distracting distortion. If you are looking to acquire something in this range, I recommend not one but both :)

I have the M8 at the moment and need a wider lens than my 35 Lux. The Lux is great for walking about with on more shy days!

Looking way ahead to getting the M9?M10 i just wonder which of the wider lenses will be most useful as my then less used more creative wide angle.

Why not 21, i suppose because i've read so many good things about the 24 Elmarit.

Prefered is the wrong word, i guess i mean 'feeling for'?

Thanks a lot for the help.

Well, for a 21 I use the ZM Biogon 21/2.8. Since the firmware was updated it performs really well on the M9 - and on the M8 it always was a superior lens. If you can't make up your mind it might be a good compromise. - and it won't break the bank :)

I went for 21 'lux to complement my 35 'lux & 50 'luxes. I originally had the 24 Elmarit, which is a superb lens btw, but I don't regret moving to the wider 21 vs 24 'lux.

If I were you I'd try and see which focal length you feel most comfortable with and then select the lens based on that. 18mm is very wide on the M9 compared to 24mm. It's easy enough to frame for 24mm equivalence within the frame of a 21mm lens but you can never add back image that you don't have. (ok - it seems with Photoshop CS5 that this is no longer true btw )

I have both, I use the 24mm much more then the 18mm. The 24mm is real wide, but it is stil not so obvious, so it became almost my standard lens. The 18mm I use only when I need the wide angle of it.

they are very different lenses, and mostly depending on the use you plan to make of them.

The 18 Elmar is very good, but for some reasons I prefer the versatility of the WATE as I did not notice significant difference between WATE and 18 except for a stronger contrast and a different color cast.

The 24 Elmar is a fantastic lens, nothing more to say.

the results in terms of perspective is much different between the two, as you probably now.

Piero - just reviewed your splendid work with the M9 and wide lenses. I'm fascinated that you've not been enaging on the red-edge debate. Is it because you're too busy taking correctly exposed real photos for real clients in real places? :D

Do keep up the good work!

The 18mm is gorgeous! I love it. It is in use manly for interior shots. Obviously it is allowed outside as well. :-)

Lucy naturally you can do different things with each focal length. Once I moved to the M9 I am very happy with a 24 as my widest focal length. In my opinion it is easier to manage and more useful with the less extreme viewpoint.

This is a basically un-cropped frame with the Elmar (just a little straighten).

That was partly shot to explore the outer zone sharpness. You can clearly see the lack of distortion and any edge issues as well, I think.

The Elmarit has long been known as an absolute standout lens as well, of course.

You can see a comparison in that gallery of the 18 and 24 viewpoints as well (those two on the M8). The 24 can give a far more 'natural' perspective.

Thank you. I am still so undecided, that's me, but i eventually get there.

I love that through the search for lens info i also get to see peoples links and read blogs, and get thoroughly immersed in photography when i should be hoovering or something else!

My newest thought is to stay as i am with the Leica and 35 lux as i need the wider lens mainly for indoor lower light shots and it might make sense to get a 35 1.4 L for a 5d2.

Thanks very much

Lucy

I don't think so. Whereas the Canon combo will get you very clean low-light shots, which seem to be the vogue nowadays, there is absolutely nothing that beats the atmosphere a Summilux 24 will give you on the M9.
