Digilux 1: maximum SD memory card ?

Still very happy with my Digilux 1 plus 64 Mb and 256 Mb SD cards !

Yesterday I inserted a friends 2Gb SD card (with big expectations for film iso foto) but that was too much for my dear Digilux 1: it was confused and lost its foto-numbering. I was at 112-0837 and now back at 100-0001. So,

- what is the maximum SD memory card capacity for a Digilux 1 ?

- will the option REC > SETUP > NO.RESET > YES allow me to contune my foto-numbering after 112-0837 ? (113-0001 is OK)

Kind regards,

Roeland.

I think it's 1gig, certainly I've used 1 gig cards in mine. It could also depend on the type of card used - maybe some of the new high speed cards don't work so well on it.

In case you don't already know, shooting TIFF gives much better results, but much fewer shots per card!

Any SD card should work with the camera which means up to 2gb. I use a Kingston 2gb card in mine and have no problems. Anything above that will be an SD HC card which will not work with the D1 or D2's but will with the D3. You can therefore use with your D1 a 2 gb card and should be able to get over 200 tiff files. By the way, I recently purchased this camera and also have the D2 and D3. It is very difficult to compare these camera mainly because they are so different, but I love the way the D1 handles , its tonal rendering and its colours. Its got a small sensor and only 4 megapixels but it can still make very nice 8x10 prints. It must be the lens. Put a black leather strap on this camera and it looks really unique. If I compare this camera to an other point and shoot that I have, the Canon G10, I think that I prefer the the D1. The G10 has more pixels and will deliver more details but it looses out with DR by burning out highlights. You gain some but you loose some. Its a give or take.

The problem was: a 2Gb card offers more than 999 Jpeg images while the Digilux-1 counter peaks at 999.

By using the REC>SETUP>NO.RESET>YES option + closing the Digilux-1 and removing the SDcard, 12 times, I succeeded to reset the image numbering from 100.0001 to 113.0001 (with thanks to De Beukelaer - Leica import Belgium).

Regards,

Roland

I tried mine and it records without any problems the exact number of available shots even at its lowest quality jpg (over 1800 pictures). Not sure why your camera was different. Could be an earlier model or maybe mine was adjusted by the previous owner.

I just noticed that at the lowest jpg setting the camera indicates the right amount of remaining shots on the lcd screen on the back, but stops at 999 on the top black and white screen. This doesn't really bother me mainly because I will never use the lowest jpg setting and with a 2gb card I will be using tiff or high quality jpg's. My Digilux 3 is the same. It indicates a miximum of 99 shots in the viewfinder but the exact amount of remaining shots on the lcd screen. It mentions this in the owners manual for the digilux 3.

Indeed, seen afterwards, my panic was exaggerated when seeing 999 on the top window and 100.0001 on the image-counter (but after 7 years stability this was a shock to me). It is all OK now.

May I, while disucussing Digilux-1, put another question. I always use Jpeg-High-Quality, and keep my originals like that. I have made a few Tiff images for test purpose, but could never see any difference with the Jpeg; even at x600 magnification.

With my new 1Gb card no problem to take Tiff; but when is it worthwhile, and if so I will certainly do.

I am not sure which is better mainly because I have never tested the difference between Tiff and HQ jpegs. I have only had the camera for a few weeks. With a two gig card, I find that I can use Tiff all the time and still get almost 200 shots. It takes about 7 seconds for the camera to save the file to my Kinston card; which is not bad. If I ever need more speed I will change over to jpeg. Tiff is a lossless format which I prefer to use just in case. I would probably not notice any difference on an 8x10 inch (A4) print. It would be interesting to get more comments on this matter.
