How does Leica glass compare to the rest of the world?

I have an 85mm f/1.4 Nikkor gathering dust in a drawer someplace. It's a perfectly good lens stopped down, but wide open I've never been happy with it, it's just soft. And what's the point of carrying a big, heavy f/1.4 lens if it doesn't perform well at f/1.4?

 

Interesting. I'm very, very happy with my 85mm f/1.4 AF-Nikkor. I seldom use it wide open, but that's because of depth of field, not sharpness. This http://photos.nurick.net/Family/Wedding/DSC1222R/664555694_keaPd-X2.jpg looks plenty sharp to me, even when I pixel-peep in the original file. Even if it's not up to the very highest standards the point tends to be academic when the depth of field is only 20mm.

I actually sold my 85 1.4 AF-D without long thinking after having tasted Leica glass wide open.

I just hated to fiddle with the CA in post.

 

Before I touched a 50 Lux, the 85 was one of my favorite lenses (together with the 50 AF-S).

 

At some point though, I might get a nice 85 1.4 Ai-s, to use with my FM3a. All the second hand ones, I came over so far were quite beaten and way to expensive though.
