Gotham Historian Posted March 25, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 25, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a M8 and a MacBook. I can't use the Capture 1 program despite installing the CD or downloading the file from Leica's website (it keeps coming up with an error message and prompts me to relaunch only to pop up the same error message). I need to process some pictures which are saved as DNG files, but Photoshop won't open or even recognize the DNG files. I suspect I need to convert the DNG files to .tiff files before I can manipulate them. I'm using the .tiff files for an article I'm writing and need to submit it to the publishers online as a .tiff file. How can I convert the DNG files to something that my Photoshop will recognize? I did a search for "DNG" on this site and came up with more entries than I can read over an entire weekend! Thanks in advance! Mike
Advertisement Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 Hi Gotham Historian, Take a look here Problem with DNG and Capture 1. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Gotham Historian Posted March 25, 2010 Author Share #2 Posted March 25, 2010 I still can't use Capture 1, but I realized that Apple OS will open the picture with Preview when you double click on the DNG file and then you can save the file as a .tiff file. Then I can open the .tiff file in Photoshop and manipulate it for publishing.
jamesk8752 Posted March 25, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 25, 2010 I don't know why you are having a problems using Capture 1 on your MacBook - I have had no issues installing and using it on my iMac running OS X 10.5.8. Have you tried trashing all the components of C1 (including preference files) before attempting a reinstall? If/when you do get it to install properly, be sure to upgrade to V 4.8.3, the last "free' version which is available to M8 users. In case you aren't aware of it, Graphic Converter, a shareware app from Lemkesoft, is a very useful photo file editor and converter - I've used it for years and it's been very useful. ho_co Posted March 25, 2010 Share #4 Posted March 25, 2010 GH-- You should also be able to open the M8's DNG directly into Bridge/Photoshop, depending on your version there, and avoid the two-step process. When the M8 came out, C1 was the only RAW converter that recognized it, but the others soon caught up.
andybarton Posted March 25, 2010 Share #5 Posted March 25, 2010 What error message go you get with C1 and what version of PS are you using?
lanetomlane Posted March 25, 2010 Share #6 Posted March 25, 2010 I can open M8 DNG files in Bridge and Photoshop CS3 (on a Mac) without any problems. ___________________________ Regards, Tom Photography by Tom Lane
mweiner Posted March 25, 2010 Share #7 Posted March 25, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm just guessing here, but I vaguely think that only newer versions of C1 are compatible with Snow Leopard -- I'm not sure as of which version of C1. You might ask C1 support. Register, login to their web site and 'open a case'. They are pretty responsive. Michael
Symeon Posted March 29, 2010 Share #8 Posted March 29, 2010 Abode RAW Converter does the job with DNG files. C1 v.4 works fine on OSX (incl. Snow Leopard) but I haven't tried v5 yet. I'll use Lightroom though, if I were you, it's friendlier. regards

Shootist Posted April 1, 2010 Share #10 Posted April 1, 2010 You need the latest version of C1 Version 4. The one that ships with the M8 does not run on new Mac computers. That is why you are having problems. Wheather you upgrade to version 5 of C1 is up to you. The latest version of C1 V4 is 4.8.3. Or that is the latest one I have.
