RichardM8 Posted August 23, 2010 Share #404 Posted August 23, 2010 I didn't know that you knew Brett Favre!? Heheheh... I had to Google him up. American Football players are pretty unknown in this neck of the woods. I see what you mean. Another one. My little boy in a colorful alley in Bangkok. Imo a good example of the X1s color rendition and dynamic range. Uncorrected DNG, only slight cropping. JPG conversion with Lightroom.

ravinj Posted August 23, 2010 Share #406 Posted August 23, 2010 Ravinj, the chandelier shot is fabulous, thanks for sharing! BTW, what settings on your X1 for the shot? Well, with what the X1 is capable of, no wonder most if not all X1 owners love this gem! F2.8, ISO 125, 1/30. I just shot it from waist level and there was no time to focus or compose properly. I must mention that this one is the DNG version processed in LR. The jpg version does not show details of the farthest corners of the wooden ceiling (it appears all dark) and there is no way to recover them - will post another example later today to show what I mean.

This one is not part of another section of the forum as a few 'X1 members' have expressed to prefer... Fair enough. But you're missing out on things such as learning about meeting with other Forum members either locally or in Venice in October, for example. You're missing out on other Leica news and you're missing out on seeing other members' work in the Photo section. To name but three things. Now, this may not be of interest to you, which is fine, but to restrict yourself to just one minority section of the Forum does seem to me to be missing the whole point a bit. YMMV, of course. Wow...goes to show the importance of having AF... One thing I notice in your image and some of others taken with this camera is that the images have a more film-like quality about them, they do not look so "digital" if I may, I am not sure of the reason, but my Nikon D300 with presumably the same kind of sensor produces images that are more "artificial", I cannot put my finger down to it, but many times I can spot the difference right away....could be the lens, I am not sure, or the image processing Leica puts its magic into...

You are correct - there is a different look-n-feel about the X1 images that makes them seem "less digital". The "texture" of the images is silky. However, I am not sure if I could spot the difference between images taken with a capable DSLR like D300 versus X1 in a blind A-B test. I don't own any DSLR now, so it would hard for me to do the comparison anyway!
davidhunternyc Posted August 24, 2010 Share #411 Posted August 24, 2010 ^^^ I was trying to put my finger on it too. I agree, the images look silky smooth, like film. They look very analog as opposed to digital. I bought my X1 due to the photos I saw on Steve Huff's website. They had this quality we are talking about. Yes, alot of it has to do with the skill of the photographer but yes, too, it has to do with the X1.

Exactly how they do it must be a very important secret.
phancj Posted August 24, 2010 Share #413 Posted August 24, 2010 I have shot similar shots with D300 and the X1, and I can say for sure the images are different, sometimes by a fair bit. The Nikon files can be sharper, but the graduations in tones can sometimes be harsher compared to the X1, even with fast primes. the X1, on the other hand, produce images that are in my opinion, much more film like. Attached photo taken in India, straight jpeg out of camera, cropped and downsized only, zero PP. Welcome, dear visitor! h00ligan Posted August 24, 2010 Share #414 Posted August 24, 2010 Maybe it's toning? I agree that shots with visible noise seem more like film...I don't necessarily see it in the previous shot, but more on higher iso...interesting observations though. I agree that shots with visible noise seem more like film...I don't necessarily see it in the previous shot, but more on higher iso...interesting observations though. I seem to see it as the finer graduations..almost like the Nikon may have less "in-between" tones. With the X1, the transition is more smooth, or at least to me. Yes, grain can make it look more like high asa film but that is another matter. I have something against the "digital" look where the demarcation of colors are sometimes too stark and the whole thing just smacks of digital. With film I see a gradual tone that smoothly blends the shades of colors and the X1 can duplicate that to a larger extent. I tried the M8 with summicron few days ago and looking at the images definitely it has the film like look. Then I shoot my D300 and see something totally different, not bad, but very different. I very much prefer the Leica rendition by far. If only there is AF on the Ms, right now, I am sticking to the X1 until a viable AF model comes out (not the S2 haha:D
RichardM8 Posted August 24, 2010 Share #416 Posted August 24, 2010 If only there is AF on the Ms, right now, I am sticking to the X1 until a viable AF model comes out I feel about the same. I played around with an M8 two days ago. My third or fourth 'close encounter' with a digital M. I love the feel of the camera but I'm still not sold on the viewfinder and manual focus only. phancj Posted August 24, 2010 Share #418 Posted August 24, 2010 I feel about the same. I played around with an M8 two days ago. My third or fourth 'close encounter' with a digital M. I love the feel of the camera but I'm still not sold on the viewfinder and manual focus only. The lack of AF is a real bummer, but I thought the viewfinder was bright and easy to use, though may be a strain after more than 100 shots...thats why I see the X1 as more of a quicker and easy shooter and nice images... The other thing with the M8 was I felt the shutter was too heavy so when it clicks it does add vibration, though the salesperson told me the problem is mitigated in the M8.2 and M9. The X1 shutter is great, zero vibration! The images with the summicron/M8 was great, and very, very natural tones, I can only imagine how much better the M9 should be. Photokina happens soon, there are rumors of a tiny R AF camera from Leica, if it happens should be interesting. Meanwhile, enjoying the X1. Was in a short boat ride this morning, here's a pic, boat was moving... Welcome, dear visitor! phancj Posted August 24, 2010 Share #419 Posted August 24, 2010 Hey Richard, Great shot! Exactly what I was talking about X1 images resembling film, look at the feel of your image of the thai monk, so natural and pleasing like film prints (altho the color treatment smacks of digital hahaha:)) Love the shot, lots of mood!
phancj Posted August 24, 2010 Share #420 Posted August 24, 2010 BTW Richard, how are you posting your images onto this site? For example, the thai monk shot, how big was the file?
