jsrockit Posted July 16, 2010 Share #262 Posted July 16, 2010 Wait, people are STILL surprised that the high ISO image quality is great in the X1?
cpclee Posted July 16, 2010 Share #263 Posted July 16, 2010 (edited) Based on what I remember of the performance of those cameras, the X1's ISO1600 output equals or beats the Digilux 2 and Ricoh GRD I at ISO200. h00ligan Posted July 17, 2010 Share #264 Posted July 17, 2010 (edited) Later that night....The x1 has crazy headroom. Artifacting is the result of the host, not the actual image. Room to improve for sure, but a lot of headroom. The more I use this camera, the happier I am honestly. Edited July 17, 2010 by h00ligan

h00ligan Posted July 17, 2010 Share #266 Posted July 17, 2010 Thanks Phancj. It's really a lot of fun for me, I feel like the x1 is helping me get better - maybe it's in my head. I do think I'd have to spend about the same price roughly on just the lens for a canon system to get anywhere near the results, which sort of puts the x1 in perspective given the size and quality! It is indeed a load of fun, I have thoroughly enjoyed it since Feb...haven't had so much fun with any other cam I ever bought in the past! My wife was buying a drink for me in the vending machine, place was really dark, see how the X1 does in tricky lighting? Jpeg is from in-camera processing... Welcome, dear visitor! RichardM8 Posted July 17, 2010 Share #268 Posted July 17, 2010 (edited) Although it looks very processed I really like that shot Edward! A random B&W grab from yesterday. Edited July 17, 2010 by RichardM8
eelekim Posted July 17, 2010 Share #269 Posted July 17, 2010 I'm not that interested in such artificial shot. But it really looks amazing, Edward! Richard, I like the picture. Thanks for sharing!

h00ligan Posted July 17, 2010 Share #271 Posted July 17, 2010 Richard - the tones are great. I need to work more on the whole creamy b/w side of things - I usually end up goinng gritty and contrasty. Phancj - I like that vending machine photo - good demonstration of how the camera deals with contrasty scenes (like a champ). As far as the image I offered - It's obviously heavily processed into the fantastic, the reason I offered it was that I don't think I have been able to pull results similar to this out of one exposure, often. That's why I feel the headroom is good. I know this forum is not particularly fond of brightly processed (well cooked hdr type) images - and honestly this is probably the farthest I've ever gone in that direction - It started when my mouse slipped on a slider and I thought - hang on, that should be much more destroyed than it is.. at which point i went fantastical with it completely Sometimes I think these kinds of shots are fun, though I doubt I'll ever be one to use the methods which result in this too terribly often. Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks for the feedback! Actually the occasional burst of exaggerated colors in a photo with HDR can be invigorating sometimes, as long as it is not a dozen photos so the senses get too overwhelmed and tired? I think with landscapes sometimes the overly-processed look can be appealing, like what country club brochures do..haha...
RichardM8 Posted July 18, 2010 Share #273 Posted July 18, 2010 I like the B&W shot phancj. Beautiful smooth/soft tonality for such a shot. Gosh that lens is sharp... Sidestep: I installed Silver Efex Pro a view days ago. I'm a long time PS and Lightroom user and I must say that up till now I don't 'get' SEP. I don't really see (yet) what it does better than LR3 besides the huge amount of film presets. The interface seems a little clumsy so me. Now this must be me 'cos there's a lot of positive writing about SEP. I just removed it from my system again.

phancj Posted July 18, 2010 Share #275 Posted July 18, 2010 I like the B&W shot phancj. Beautiful smooth/soft tonality for such a shot. Gosh that lens is sharp... Thanks a lot Richard. Actually the overhead metal halide lamps are too strong and casts a unnaturally harsh shadow, you can see it on the faces, especially the girl's. I know this nice couple and I have shot them with my D300 and believe me the x1 does a whole lot better. But I think my B&W conversions are flawed somehow, either with PS, LR or SEP...haven't really sat down to read the manuals or spend more time with the softwares since I have been busy, and only visit this forum during my breaks. Thats the reason why I bought the Nik's complete suite (plus the fact that it was on offer:)) I havent really seen any big deal of SEP but must confess the Dfine noise reduction software was not bad. Rest of the suite I havent really tried much, will do so when time permits. Going to Thailand following week, will be bringing the X1 and see what shots I can get. BTW, what parameters did you tweak in your shot? Your B&W conversion seemed to have a lot of tonality and "look" going for it, my color jpeg was alright, but converted to B&W the effect wasn't what I had in mind! You must be doing something right that I ain't...

RichardM8 Posted July 18, 2010 Share #278 Posted July 18, 2010 (edited) Going to Thailand following week, will be bringing the X1 and see what shots I can get. Ha, there's a coincidence. I'm heading for Thailand next week too for a 3 week holiday. Yesterday I've picked up a 2nd battery for the X1 a two extra SD cards. The little one is gonna be busy there... You must be doing something right that I ain't... I don't have a standard set of parameters. I tweak every image differently. Obviously depending on the original file and the scene. I find processing of B&W images much more difficult than color to get a certain look that you aim for. Next to the global adjustments for exp. contrast and clarity, the separate color sliders in LRoom keep corresponding to the gray-scale values in the B&W image (Black & White Mix). This allows for very accurate and subtle adjustments of specific parts of the image when you look at the original colors. But I'm clearly in learning mode here too. PS, does that guy in the B&W image I posted above look like Keith Richards on a good day or what?... Edited July 18, 2010 by RichardM8

I already bought the 2nd battery but seriously felt I wasted my money since when in India last month a battery was good enough for the day (maybe I not shooting enough??) Once again, thanks for sharing...
