microview Posted March 22, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 22, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am considering the 2008-discontinued 90mm f2.8 Elmarit lens: does it have the 'magic' of say, the 24mm 2.8 ASPH, the 50mm Summilux ASPH, or the v4 35 Summicron? Or is it comparatively ordinary in the way it draws (I know it has a reputation for 'sharpness')?

AlanJW Posted March 22, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 22, 2010 It is a terrific lens. I got mine new old stock at Photo Village for essentially the same price as a Summarit and I am very happy with it. See link below for an earlier post with a shot with this lens. <http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/116162-compact-telephoto-compressed-landscapes.html#post1244207>
250swb Posted March 22, 2010 Share #4 Posted March 22, 2010 Its the best value lens for price and image quality in my opinion. I think it renders beautifully. Steve
chrism Posted March 22, 2010 Share #5 Posted March 22, 2010 Mine is sharper than either of the Summarit 90's or any of the Summicron 90's (all preASPH though) I have had. Nice lens! Chris
The_hog Posted March 22, 2010 Share #6 Posted March 22, 2010 An example: Flickr Photo Download: Höfnin A little barrel distortion but very sharp.

I got mine used near mint from Stan Tamarkin ~ $1295 Michael Sossenheimer | Salt Lake City Great out of the box without adjustment; but I haven't used it much - I am playing with an old 135 Tele-Elmar and 75 Summarit. Wesley Posted March 23, 2010 Share #9 Posted March 23, 2010 Recently I got my mint copy for $700. It's just stunning good! Best partner with a 1.4x magnifier.
yanidel Posted March 23, 2010 Share #10 Posted March 23, 2010 It would be a good companion to your 24mm Elmarit and 50mm Lux. Yet I think the 90mm Cron pre-asph would be a better match for the Cron v4.
likalar Posted March 23, 2010 Share #11 Posted March 23, 2010 I have that lens and have grown to love using it, even looking for excuses to change over to the 90. It's everything I could expect of a lens, and performs much better than I ever will. As far as "magic" and drawing ability, etc....I don't see any quirky behaviors that give this lens a special "personality" that maybe you are looking for. However, if you are after the ability to make sharp accurate captures, without excuses, this lens won't disappoint, and is a real bargain, IMO. Best of luck. The_hog Posted March 23, 2010 Share #12 Posted March 23, 2010 Got mine on Ebay for US 1.000,- plus freight. Incredible value.
Printmaker Posted March 23, 2010 Share #13 Posted March 23, 2010 I got mine used near mint from Stan Tamarkin ~ $1295Michael Sossenheimer | Salt Lake City Great out of the box without adjustment; but I haven't used it much - I am playing with an old 135 Tele-Elmar and 75 Summarit. I got mine from Stan a few years back for $200 less. Great lens. I think it matches my 35 cron IV. Don't even think twice about another 90. Here's a random sample. Welcome, dear visitor! glacierparkmagazine Posted March 24, 2010 Share #14 Posted March 24, 2010 I use an old version on the M9 and it works well. You just have to make doubly sure that you've told the camera you're using an old 90 elmarit (can't remember the setting off the top of my head) or it doesn't focus at infinity. Like most Leica glass, this lens is sweet wide open. There' some samples on my blog at Glacier Park Magazine blog
gwelland Posted March 24, 2010 Share #15 Posted March 24, 2010 It's a superb lens. I bought mine originally when I was shooting with my M8 but I actually chose it in preference to the 90 Summicron ASPH after originally buying the 'cron. I've been very very happy with it and there are plenty of bargain copies out there if you don't mind getting coding done.
Double Negative Posted March 24, 2010 Share #16 Posted March 24, 2010 I use the 2,8/90 Elmarit-M, albeit with my M8. A fantastic lens by any measure, and a relative bargain in Leicaland.

lars_bergquist Posted March 24, 2010 Share #18 Posted March 24, 2010 I have one too and like it very much. I use it uncoded on my M9. Why not? It does not vignette, it shows no rededge/greenedge, and who cares about exifs? I can recognise a 90 when I see the pictures.
