Well, not many have been able to do a side by side comparison. I suspect the fact that the VC is metal and cheaper and the X1 VF is not really available makes people just assume the Leica one sucks without trying it (or assume it is overpriced which is most likely right). I can understand, I've been trying to talk myself out of the Leica one for weeks. However, I just don't care for the VC one on the X1.

Got it! So you prefer the rectangular finder.

Is this purely because of the Leica name or because its 36mm? From a build perspective I can't see how the 36mm finder comes close; my only concerns would be if its close enough to the base of the shoe to see the green focus confirmation light.

From an esthetic perspective I think the Voigtlander works really well on the X1 body (purely subjective) whereas the Leica finder looks a bit cheap dare I say it... at least from the photos I've seen.

Yeah, I prefer rectangular finders. I also like it that it is exactly 36mm (though 1mm isn't going to make a big difference for a finder, just in my head), it looks good on the X1, and well, I already paid for mine. ;) I've also never had a genuine Leica finder, only VC and Ricoh. I don't mind plastic. Plastic, to me, does not always equal cheap just as metal does not always equal quality.

The green light hasn't been issue with any of the finders people are using.

  • 3 weeks later...

I've been reading a LOT on this viewfinder and many are calling it plastic and not as good as the Voigtlander viewfinder. I'm sure the Voigt is nice but online descriptions are very specific in the build materials. This is from B&H:

"This Leica X1 Brightline Finder is a viewfinder for the 36mm equivalent lens of the Leica X1 compact digital camera. The camera does not have a built in viewfinder so this is the perfect accessory for using your camera in bright sunlight. This is a passive finder, so no camera data is viewed if the LCD screen is turned off.

The finder provides a remarkably vibrant, high-contrast image. Due to a concave mirror in the optics, part of the incoming light is used to illuminate the picture outline as a bright frame. This is the same as in viewfinders of Leica M cameras.

The optics are given a high-quality multi-layer coating to guarantee optimum viewing through the finder in all conditions. The high-quality metal body of the finder is designed in the popular retro look of the fifties and sixties, but is milled from solid brass according to the latest technologies. The eyepiece side is rubberized to protect eyeglasses."

So not only does it have awesome optics, is exactly 36mm to match the camera, is metal also, but also had a rubberized end for my glasses.

I've made my choice!

The housing is plastic...
