stunsworth Posted November 2, 2008 Share #282 Posted November 2, 2008 Just try the iPhone Unless you want either... a. To use it as a tethered modem or b. To stream video/sound At least in the UK neither is possible with a 3G connection. Streaming is possible, but only with a wireless connection. Very annoying. Leitzmac Posted November 2, 2008 Share #283 Posted November 2, 2008 Unless you want either... a. To use it as a tethered modem or b. To stream video/sound At least in the UK neither is possible with a 3G connection. Streaming is possible, but only with a wireless connection. Very annoying. Not half as annoying as the shortcomings on iPhone version one. I was given one for Christmas (would never have bought one, following the flaws in the 1st generation iPod I was intending to wait for the next gen. iPhone) and have found it fantastic in some ways but the fact it doesn't do (or does but in a rather convoluted way) things that my old mobile did with ease is hugely frustrating! However I'm sure Apple have addressed many of these limitations in the current version and are striving to sort the ones you've mentioned above in time for the next Steve. We live in hope! stunsworth Posted November 2, 2008 Share #284 Posted November 2, 2008 I'm certain that there's nothing in the iPhone itself that prevents either streaming, or its use as a modem, rather it;s a decision by the telecom companies. Partly I suspect as a result of the pricing model that Apple have imposed on them and their desire to maintain revenue from other products.. Oh, and the camera's pretty poor also - and doesn't allow recording of video - though again I've heard of cracked phones being modified to allow video. Roll on v3! AlanG Posted November 3, 2008 Share #287 Posted November 3, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Maybe I was thinking of a different MB? Because the last and the current ones have: MacBook Keyboard on Flickr - Photo Sharing! The last ones had digital S/PDIF sound input and output (as I do not the age/type of MB you had, I do not know about yours). But they were hidden inside the standard stereo plugs. With special cables this could be used (and still can be used). This was well documented and a very elegant solution IMO. Just to show you I'm not crazy, here is a photo of the MacBook keyboard. No page up or page down marking on the arrow keys and no embedded numerical keypad. I am not sure if they would have worked by pressing another key but if so, this is really not user friendly. The computer was bought new in March 2008. I couldn't find anything about S/PDIF in the manual. It doesn't matter as the computer is gone now. Don't get me wrong, I think Macs are fine. I used one when I taught classes and I feel pretty comfortable on them. And I have a G4 desktop with OS 9 and use that occasionally. It just isn't a night and day difference to me as some would make you think. And I think the MacBook Pros are nice, they just really lack good small laptops. Welcome, dear visitor! Leitzmac Posted November 3, 2008 Share #288 Posted November 3, 2008 And I think the MacBook Pros are nice, they just really lack good small laptops. Please forgive my ignorance (as I have never used one personally), but I friend of mine who has always been a staunch supporter of Windows recently bought a MacBook Air and says it's the best purchase he's ever made. Having said that, not knowing how powerful they are I'm wondering if they're suitable for photographic purposes? Just a thought.

AlanG Posted November 3, 2008 Share #290 Posted November 3, 2008 Please forgive my ignorance (as I have never used one personally), but I friend of mine who has always been a staunch supporter of Windows recently bought a MacBook Air and says it's the best purchase he's ever made. Having said that, not knowing how powerful they are I'm wondering if they're suitable for photographic purposes? Just a thought. Without Firewire, I couldn't attach it to my camera. And without a CD/DVD reader or burner... I haven't looked at it any further. (No card slot either - I like to use the fast Cardbus 64 CF reader.) The Mac laptops seem to run a long time on a charge. As an example, of just one laptop that I like, look at this and perhaps others from Fujitsu. Consider that it is a tablet/convertible pc and has an indoor/outdoor screen option. (I haven't seen this display in a while so I don't know how good the current indoor/outdoor unit is. The Fujitsu indoor/outdoor screen may not be ideal for adjusting photos but it allows you to shoot tethered outside or in bright light. And I rarely do fine photo adjustments on a laptop.) Fujitsu Computer Systems - LifeBook T5010 Notebook There are lots of other models from Fujitsu alone. Then there are many other manufacturers to choose from. Motion Computing makes some very interesting tablets.
jamesmd Posted November 3, 2008 Share #291 Posted November 3, 2008 Mac , always . I've worked with Mac's for 14 years and no problem ever, I have 8 now and even the old G3 is working on Mac OsX without spending a € on it , and since then it had its usb fireware etc . The only problem is they last for ever , and you have to invent a excuse to buy a new one . I even have a Quadra on OS 7 and still running James

I need to run FinalCutPro on my laptop, and the Air just won't handle it. The MacBookPro isn't a massive brick...perfectly portable.

The MacBookPro isn't a massive brick...perfectly portable. I know , if you look at my earlier post you'll notice I use a MacBook Pro and it does a fine job for me. I only mentioned the Air in response to the chap who stated that Apple are thin on 'good small laptops'.
zeitz Posted November 4, 2008 Share #294 Posted November 4, 2008 PC Dell Precision 670, two Xeon 3.60GHz processors, 4 GB of RAM, dual 21 " Dell monitors, Konica Minolta 5400 film scanner, Canon 8800F flatbed scanner, all running under XP Pro 32 bit Service Pack 3. Also two 1 TB hard drives with a WD 2 TB My Book backup. I use Photoshop CS 3, Capture One 4, and a Canon iPF5100 printer. This is a great setup. With CS4 I might upgrade to a 64 bit operating system and add more RAM. 32 bit OS can only use 4 GB of RAM. I would need then to get a new film too. TimF Posted November 5, 2008 Share #296 Posted November 5, 2008 I'd like to poll the members of the forum. Which computer system do you use, Mac or PC. I would also like to track which processor, how much RAM, and what color calibration system is being used. Once I get 50 repsonses I will tally the results for all to review. I will continue with the tally every 25 responses moving forward. A valid answer would look like this: PC, P4 1.66mHz, 1mg, Blue eye pro. If you would like to add more information in your reply for the benefit of the forum feel free. I only ask that you make your poll answer as easy for me to find as possible. Let the fun begin. Spanking new MacBook Pro, 2.4 GHz, 2 meg RAM, will soon calibrate with ColorMunki.
