no disrespect intended but i still don't get it how anyone would want to use gf2 micro 4/3 alongside their m9 and sell their 5d2 to get it? please could someone enlighten me?

I guess it may come down to your photographic needs, likes & desires .... or your understanding of 'back-up'.The EP1 EP2 EPL1 GF1 all take great photos, allow usage of Leica glass and are in comparison cheap.Yeah - nothing beats my M9. But I can't afford another M9 as a back-up for my M9. The GF1 can be there, should the M9 ever fail, it does Macro, HD video and is well designed. YEP I'd like an X1 too - or a future Dlux 5. We'll see. For now for me it's the GF1. BTW - the EPL1 will have a 'real' underwater housing to 40 meters ... now that's a 'back-up'.You will never find two answers alike ... why have a 'back-up' at all?

As a small camera beside my RFs and the D300, the Pen E-P2 was the choice for me. A realy good EV and the anti-shake made the race for me. A 20mm pancake from Pana will be added soon.

A 50mm 'Cron is really singing on this little camera and the manual focus is easier compare to RF. (Full focusing all over the field - no recomposing and loosing the point)

Currently I have exactly the same combo in M9 + GF1. In my recent holiday trip, I brought along the GF1 with 20 f1.7, 45 f2.8 and 7-14 lenses. Suddenly I realised that I found changing lens a chore. I could live with the 20 f1.7 through-out my journey. Now I am considering selling all my m4/3 equipment to fund an X1. M9 + X1 may be too restrictive, but I thought that suit someone who is too lazy to change lens.

Rick, I have gone the same road. I sold my Canon gear, making a brief detour with the Sony A900 (which I like very much with Zeiss glass), but then sold all my DSLR gear for the M8 with a few lenses, plus the GF1. The GF1 is basically for me a "fixed lens" camera with the 20/1.7, but I did buy the 45-200 for the very reason you mention--it's my only long tele option now. And the M8 quickly morphed into an M9.

I once tried the 1D mk II. Yeah, great camera. But I could not stand to lug it around. And with the advent of the M8 and mFT, I realized at last that I could get back to smaller gear and be very happy.

Exactly.

If one only could get a X1 - just as difficult as the M9 - looks like people have been waiting since Sept 09 (see Leica X1 forum)....

A fast note on this years GF1 lenses there will be a new gf1 lens for all you wildlife guys a 100-300mm so on the gf1 that would really be a 200-600mm

If leica come out with something like the GF1 I would consider buying it.

Trading in the 5D2 this weekend as I stated in the OP and got on the waiting list of those people that have paid for an M9. Now, I got a call yesterday from my dealer (Mark at Glazers) that they got 3-4 cameras Monday and a black one is there for me to pick up. I was thinking I had a month or two. Oh, the buyers remorse... :D

Won't have time to pick it up until Saturday.

Thanks Chris. I have an M8 so, I have a 75 lux, 50 lux asph, 28 cron, and the WATE. I am really looking forward to trying all of these lenses on FF for various reasons that are specific to each one. I'm not sure which lens I'll find the most interesting on the M9?

I know the 50 has been little used on my M8 even though I consider it the best. It may become a favorite.

The 28 cron was used 90%+ of the time. I really liked the perspective on the M8 I'm not sure how much that will change on the M9. I will admit that I'm really wanting the little 35mm cron for the M9 but, I'll wait and see how the 28 cron suits me.

The WATE is going to be one of the first lenses I try in order to see true super wide FOV that I missed on the M8.

The 75 Lux is a favorite on the M8 and I'm not sure if it will now make me want the 90mm you mention. If I get a 90 I want a small travel friendly lens. Don't know enough about it but the Macro Elmar seems nice.

How do you think my lens collection will shake out once I start using them on the M9? I predict the 50 Lux will get a lot more use. Other than that I'm not sure.

Edit: I'll never sell the 75 Lux. I have a late copy and it is perfect. It is just a really fun lens to shoot even though it doesn't get carried around a lot for obvious reasons.

Very interesting thread. For travel purposed I am seriously considering the GF1 because I want a long telephoto lens to shoot wildlife. Normally I carry my Nikon D3 with a Leitax converted Apo-Telyt-R 280mm, but that is pretty hefty!

How is the GF1/45-200 combo for wildlife? And why use the 20mm f/1.7 lens and not the Leica 25mm f/1.4? Is it the compact design mainly?

I have both the GF1 and the 5D2. I use the GF1 10 times more than the 5D2, and it is my travel camera. The queality is easily good enough (if you don't need high iso) for A4 prints. I would love a M9 too, but that would be too much. I wouldn't sell the 5D2 as it has its specalist uses, that neither the GF1 or M9 could compete with - studio work for example

Hi Mac. The 20/1.7 is a pancake lens and is all of 1" long. It can come with the camera if you buy it that way. The Leica is much larger and a grand more. Other than that, the Leica is probable pretty great. I think that one of the joys of this little camera is the GF1 + pancake lens. I know that for me this combo is the reason to buy the camera.

I am sure the 45-200 (EF=90-400!) has got to be pretty nice. That zoom factor alone has got to be real nice to have. Only down side would be the slow speed.

I've been shooting the M9 for the last several days and I am more surprised by it than I thought. This is NOT an M8 with a bigger sensor, like I thought it was going to be. More later.

the 5D mark 2 is far more superior, its fast and furious. It can take video, macros and fast shots. Though its quite heavy the way I go about reducing the weight is to only carry one 50mm, f1.4 lens. The weight is only sightly heavier than the M9.

GF1 well if I am going to buy this, I would rather go for the Leica X1. The image quality is as good as an entry level SLR camera. The weight is only 280 grams.

Fast and furious? Wasn't that a bad teen racer-car movie? And, how can something be "more" superior?

The X1 has nice image quality for sure, but, to use your lexicon, it ain't fast and furious, if that's what rev's your engine. But, it is certainly one of the choices.

That combo is ~2x the volume of an M9 with a 50/1.4 summilux asph though, but as an M shooter I'm sure you're aware of the ergonomic advantages of the rangefinder system.
