M3 with elmar 24mm 3.8

Just tried a new 24mm elmar with my M3. I noted that on mounting the lens the 50mm and 135mm framelines show in the viewfinder just as when no lens is mounted. I checked that the lens was properly mounted which it was and re-mounted several times to be sure. Each time both framelines were shown. I then mounted a 21mm super angulon 3.4 ( I'm deciding which lens to buy !) and as I had expected only the 50mm framelines showed. Any members able to explain why the elmar shows up 2 framelines - the camera seems to recognise it as a 135mm lens!

Incidentaly I'm leaning towards the super angulon.

James thanks for the reply. Yes I am using a separate viewfinder for composition but found it strange that the super angulon only triggers the 50mm frameline leaving a nice uncluttered viewfinder for focusing whereas the modern lens triggers the 135mm frameline inside the 50 mm.

The M3 has a different caming device in the bayonet mount for actioning the 3 different frames in the viewfinder than the M4 P and following models with 6 frames.

The 21 is contemporary of the M3, the 24 is younger and it is neutral in the M3 bayonet mount.

The SA has really bad vignetting to around F16. I sold mine for this reason.

Check out before you buy.

The upside is distortion ( curving of straight lines) is very small

.

After a weekend with both lenses my initial view has changed. Whilst the super angulon was small and handled well I felt its colour rendition was somewhat 'cold' and there was some light falloff at the edges. The Elmar was quite simply stunning in every way. That is the lens I am buying.
