ashwinrao1 Posted March 13, 2010 Share #22 Posted March 13, 2010 Kurt, you may be my one man wallet wrecking crew! I am trying to conceive of ways to get that brilliant lens now? 1. Sell off my 50 lux asph, 50 noct, and 75 summilux, and that'd get me close...but wow, so much to give up.... 2 Any regrets giving up your set up for this beaut? From your images, I see no reason to doubt your choice....

From your images, I see no reason to doubt your choice.... The Nocti ASPH is really fantastic- and addictive. One does not ever want to take it off the camera. However, it does not also replace the 50 f1.4 ASPH from F1.4 on down as some might think. The 50 lux ASPH is so much smaller and focuses to 0.7 M whereas the Nocti is a beast (but a pretty beast) and only goes to 1M. This difference can be substantial depending on the subject. You really need to keep the lux ASPH and buy the Nocti !!! By the way, I also think the Nocti ASPH might even surpass the lux ASPH IQ at F4 on down. I know, we are driving you nuts. Sorry.... Hacker Posted March 13, 2010 Share #24 Posted March 13, 2010 Yesterday, a few friends tested for fun the Noct ASPH against 30 other 50mm lenses over drinks and snacks. We did not try to bring too many lenses, but the results were rather surprising. Instead of posting individual shots, I have linked the test on another forum here. Not too sure what the rules are, but if this is against policy, just let me know and I will remove it. 50mm RF lenses Shot Wide Open using M9 - ClubSNAP Photography Forums
Ecar Posted March 13, 2010 Share #25 Posted March 13, 2010 Very interesting indeed. Although bokeh may be a fairly subjective matter, I'm surprised by the differences in apparent sharpness - maybe a micro-contrast factor, but still...

tdtaylor Posted March 13, 2010 Share #27 Posted March 13, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Nice comparison. Excellent background for your comparison, although I could not help but notice that the liquor level in the scotch bottle remained the same. Don't know if I could have pulled that off. Now if it had been an 18 yr or 24 yr, no way
digitalfx Posted March 13, 2010 Share #28 Posted March 13, 2010 Looks like the 50 Lux asph photo is not displaying...would love to see it in the test.
D&A Posted March 13, 2010 Share #29 Posted March 13, 2010 Hi Hacker, I had a question after seeing this wonderful comparison of all those 50's. I noticed (from memory) that only the Nokton 50mm f1.1 didn't reproduce or display most all of the soft eliptical or cricular reflections on the entire right side of the frame....as most all other 50's in your test did...regardless of speed of a given lens. Only this lens exhibited this trait. It's as though it handled these spectral highlights in a completely different way than the rest of them, at least on the left side of the frame. Can't figure out why? Did anyone else notice this? Other than that, center sharpness appeared to hold its own against the rest of them, although posting 100% crops would be helpful. I've always felt the bokeh and diffusion of the background with this lens looked more like a 1.2-1.4 rather than a 1.1, although it appeared to put in a fine performance for the money. Guest Bernd Banken Posted March 13, 2010 Share #30 Posted March 13, 2010 no money for the new Nocti but a visit to Venice planned with a f3.5 35mm Summaron, the Super Angulon or a 4x5 f4 90mm? Don't worry, just do it including night shots: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/menschen/117869-menschen-venedig.html

Marty Posted March 14, 2010 Share #35 Posted March 14, 2010 Interesting to see the differences between Summilux ASPH and Noctilux ASPH at f1.4 here. The bokeh is really quite different. Sharpness a bit harder to assess at less than 100% - the Lux appears slightly better as shown.
Hacker Posted March 14, 2010 Share #36 Posted March 14, 2010 Other than that, center sharpness appeared to hold its own against the rest of them I've not seen many lenses where center sharpness was an issue. That said, we did not set up the target to see edge and corner sharpness.
lumberjacksr Posted March 14, 2010 Share #37 Posted March 14, 2010 I did feel sad since I have bought the M Noctilux f/0.95 ASPH last December, because I am still waiting for the M9 camera. I do feel better after reading this thread, I think I have a better preparation to use it when the camera be delivered soon hopefully. Thanks Kurt.
