Type of Grease for Rough Shutter Release Fix?

I am contemplating doing the fix mentioned in this post from 2007. In the post it mentions using "thermally stable PTFE grease". I haven't got any of that, but I do have some silicone grease. Could anyone with knowledge of such things advise me on whether silicone grease would be OK for lubricating the shutter button after the polishing mentioned in the post?

I have just looked at the tube and it says that silicone grease:

  • has high electrical insulation
  • waterproofs / repels moisture
  • has high temperature resistance

so to my mind it sounds like a good solution. Anyone care to comment on anything that would make it a bad idea?

Thanks in advance

Don't do it. In spite of all the comment about the release button machining, the grittiness in my experience comes from the adjustment of the shutter release switch. You'll find a thread where I explain how to do it. I certainly don't recommend using a grease which may or may not be appropriate.

Don't use silicone grease, at least not the commoner kinds. They can creep like crazy and go places you don't want them. They are a very good electrical insulator - so you don't want them near the switch. Also if there's any trace of sparking they form insulating metal silicides on switch contacts.

:cool:Silently disassembling shutter release button asslembly again, removing grease (very, very small amount, just on the one upper polished contact surface, which showed slight wear on one side).

And it felt sooo much better slightly greased :o

Mine was not just "gritty feeling" before the operation - I often just slipped from AE lock to shutter release without proper distinction of the two steps - surely a downgrade in feel from a M6 classic.

Thanks for the warning and insight - I appreciate that.
