markpsf Posted March 5, 2010 Share #1 Â Posted March 5, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've used ACMAXX screen protectors before with great success, but I'm still waiting to get word on if and when for the X1. Â Any other suggestions welcome. I've used Invisible Shield but hate the mess and the challenge of air bubbles. I much prefer a very thin glass one or an easy on and off plastic one. The latter might do as a temporary measure til ACMAXX or GGFS release one. Â I don't want this to prompt a debate re screen protector pro and cons; I do know some of you prefer not to use one. But I'm in the category of "if there is a way to scratch something he will"! Â Mark

One of the payoffs of the ACMAXX, though I'm sure the quality of the Giotto is better.  And, is there one for the X1 or is a standard 2.7" one likely to fit?  Mark
richfx Posted March 5, 2010 Share #4  Posted March 5, 2010 I find them to be quite thin and unobtrusive. Here is a photo of one on my M9. Their 2.5" model SP 8250 fits the M9, although it does not indicate that it is specifically made to do so. Not sure about the X1, although they do offer a 2.7" size - Model SP 8270. markgay Posted March 7, 2010 Share #7 Â Posted March 7, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've always used the adhesive plastic sheets that you cut to size, made for the past 15 years for Palm PDAs and now touch screen phones. Â Once it roughs up, you peel it off and apply a new one, usually every couple of years. Â The advantage is they add no bulk. Â Mark

markgay Posted March 7, 2010 Share #9 Â Posted March 7, 2010 But don't these make the X1's already outdated low res screen even worse? Â They do. Although, they tend to be matte, these peel-on-peel-off protectors, so you you are also getting a different look - rather like a matte screen on a laptop versus the new high-contrast glossy style. Â Is it really lower resolution or are you just losing the glossy look? Â Mark

I don't see a noticable difference with the screen protector on.  It definately doesn't influence the resolution of the screen.
kdemas Posted March 13, 2010 Share #11 Â Posted March 13, 2010 I went to snag a Giottos Aegis LCD protective glass cover but the proportions of the 2.7" version looked like it might not fit correctly (I didn't have the camera with me unfortunately). Does anyone know which version works with the X1? Â Thanks, Â Kent

eduardoho Posted March 13, 2010 Share #13 Â Posted March 13, 2010 Thank you so much for the posting. I have same issues fearing to damage the plastic LCD screen. Just ordered from Adorama of NYC one Giottos SP8270, they had for Pentax cameras @ USD 19.99 w/free shipping. YEEESSS, it would be nice for X1 to have a scratch resistant sapphire glass LCD, of course with anti reflective coating; instead they give us the elaborate but nonfunctional super fancy packaging...but this is Leica. eduardoho Posted March 19, 2010 Share #15  Posted March 19, 2010 Ditto! Mark OH MY GOD... I ordered the Giotto SP8270 from Adorama NYC and they sent instead Giotto SP 8301L which also fits the Canon EOS-40D like the SP 8270, but not a perfectly on a Leica X1.  I have used my X1 for about three weeks now, and I have been very careful and I have not noticed any scratches developed yet on the LCD monitor screen. Does any one know whether is this a sapphire crystal (which I doubt it very much) like the recently introduced M9? Or is it a hardened plexiglass? If this being the case, then I really don't need a LCD screen protector. AND of course it would be magnificently convenient if the LCD screen was user replaceable. Fast delivery and fits perfectly on X1 screen. I my opinion it does not make it worse. I am happy with the protector.
eduardoho Posted March 23, 2010 Share #17 Â Posted March 23, 2010 I got an answer to my query w/ Leica Allendale NJ and they told me that the LED screen is made of hardened Plexiglass. I also have noticed that after 3 weeks or so of use, there has been no scratches noticed at the LED screen, I have taken my X1 to the field, outdoor environment, etc.. and of course I have been extra careful, but was really wondering the necessity of a screen protector. Any kind of film will add opacity and hinder in the light transmission of an already not too stellar LED, and if the LED screen gets destroyed it can be replaced by Leica....So I was really wondering if the screen protector is really necessary? Â BTW have any of you noticed the phenomenal display screen of the latest iPod killer introduced by Microsoft called ZuneHD? I am fortunate to have one. It got a super thin, super bright, high contrast organic LED (OLED) screen, photochromic sensitive, touchscreen, made of shatterproof scratch resistant optical quality sapphire crystal with accelerometer (all this for under USD130.00!!!)....meaning super bright display under sunlight and dim at night....with this you ain't be needing a VF or screen films....a dream for us the poor Leicaphiles to desire it on the back of next generation of X1's??? nigelb Posted March 23, 2010 Share #18 Â Posted March 23, 2010 .....the LED screen is made of hardened Plexiglass. I also have noticed that after 3 weeks or so of use, there has been no scratches noticed at the LED screen...... Â Three weeks??? my D2 is six years old and I'm probably the third user - The screen is still absolutely flawless, no I don't use screen protectors just gently buff the screen occasionally with a microfibre cloth. In fact i've never scatched the screen on any camera I've ever owned. Strikes me that anyone who manages to scratch the screen in three weeks isn't treating the camera with the respect it deserves. jsrockit Posted March 23, 2010 Share #19 Â Posted March 23, 2010 I don't use a screen protector and my X1 has been rubbing on shirt buttons and zippers... and no scratches. I think it is quite durable without a protector.
eduardoho Posted March 23, 2010 Share #20 Â Posted March 23, 2010 thanks for reinforcing my thoughts, I also never had any issues with any of my LED screens till I came to this Forum and ended up ordering a GIOTTO screen which I don't like after seeing it. It has opacity and will hinder on the light trasmissibility...besides hardened Plexiglass can be restored back to its high luster by gently buffing it with toothpaste.
