Selecting a Nocti

I'd like to get a 1.0, 50mm but I can't seem to find a good resource to describe the history and differences of the various years.

I know everyone discusses the "versions" of the 35 'lux's and other lenses but I can't find anything like this relating to the 1.0 Noctilux.

I've seen some for sale that seem to have "Canada" stamped on them and others that don't. Can you give me some links to go and research these?

Also does anyone have any advice relative to which 1.0 Nocti may be held in higher regard or recommended over another? Is there any significant difference in a Canada version vs. a German version?

Any advice or assistance is appreciated.

Thanks,

matt

ps I have read the wonderfully informative review and comparisons between the 0.95 and the 1.0 versions, but I'm interested in comparing various 1.0 versions (if any).

Thanks again.

Hi,

there is only ONE optical version of the Noctilux 1.0/50mm. Changes only were made to the lens barrel: Filter size was altered from 58 to 60 mm, hood was changed from bayonet-mount to built in. Take whatever you get for a reasonable price - they all perform the same. And it´s said they all were built in Canada, whatever will be engraved.

What Friedhelm said. There is one optical version but maybe coatings were changed as the years rolled along but that's about it. That's probably why there isn't too much discussion of the "versions". As far as I know they're all made in Canada. I use the E58 and love it, I bought this version because it is very slightly smaller than the E60 and it doesn't have the sliding lens hood of the last E60. They are all good...

There were three versions in E60 size, bayonet-mount hood, clamp-on hood, build-in hood. More important than the build-type is to have the RF properly calibrated by Leica, best to send in the lens and camera (from my own experience with this lens).

Thanks to all for the education and the links (very helpful).

It seems the very last versions of the E-60, 1.0 (perhaps with the built-in hood?) were not made in Canada, otherwise it appears all the previous editions were Canadian.

Is there any reason to pursue the latest (German? made) edition? It seems that most who love their Nocti 1.0 apparently have Canada made lenses. I don't presently own any lenses made in Canada but I've not read anything that would discourage me from getting one.

Thanks again,

m

In practice I see no reason not to purchase/use Leitz Canada lenses. For all practical purposes - not from a collecting point of view - there will be no discernible difference apart from a possible minimal variation due to manufacturing tolerances. I have the Canadian 1st version Noctilux f 1 as well as several 35mm f 2 Summicrons of both Wetzlar, Solms and Canadian origin. In the latter cases, there is no discernible difference in the Canadian and German lenses of the same generation. I purchased a Canadian version (screw type) because it was cheaper than the German version.

The last batch of Noctilux lenses were kept in stock in Germany ;).

Leitz / Leica lenses are / were made in Canada, Germany, Japan and for some Compact models even in China - so what?

Leica cameras are / were made / assembled in Portugal, Canada, Japan, China and Germany. Even "Made in Germany" does not mean all parts being produced in Germany.

Leica is a German based international company and responsible for the quality level, wherever the single product comes from - nothing more and nothing less.

Again, thanks so much.

I rather assumed it didn't make any difference whether they were made in Canada or someplace else for the same "version" of the lens; I was hoping to clarify that there were no other edition differences in the later non-Canadian make other than the attached hood.

I appreciate all the advice and encouragement, now to just find one with-in my budget
