Ok, first a image of me with the Leica: Imageshack - l1000148.jpg

Then without me and the mess: Imageshack - p1040449i.jpg + Imageshack - p1040450.jpg

Making pictures feels more real with a viewfinder, I have to admit. My wife thinks otherwise but that's I guess because of the price :D

I bought mine 35mm Voightlander at http://www.cameraquest.com/:

VF%2035%20M%20S%201.jpg

I'ts € 159. I get it tomorrow so I cannot give a review yet but I've read on this forum it's a good one.

For some reason this finder is tight on the X1--that is that the camera is recording a wider field than the finder indicates. I would have expected the opposite because the finder is 35 and the camera presumably 36. I don't know if the finder or the camera are off. If you're very close to the subject (maybe within 5 or 6 feet) the finder is fairly accurate. Kind of reminds me of the original M8 which I didn't like for this reason. The LCD on the camera is of course spot on.

I have the same experience with the MiniFinder. The goog thing is that it also has framelines for 28mm and using those over six feet , the framing is smackdab the same as the LCD.

I too have the Voigtlander 35mm metal finder (not the mini finder. I rather like the tight fit because I can leave the finder on all the time without fearing it will come adrift in the bag, which has happened to me with other combinations. I wear glasses but have little problem seeing the frame ... and it looks good too!

When you guys are using the external VF with the X1, with the LCD off, how do you know your exposure? Does the LCD just show this info?

You press the Info button and that will turn the LCD on so you can save the info. When I use the viewfinder I set the aperture and let the camera set the shutter speed. I either use Auto ISO ( you can pre set your max. ISO and/or lowest speed) or set it manually if I am inclined so. Even Sean Reid was satisfied with the X1's metering. The AF light is visible almost all the time (except very bright) and you learn very fast the sound the camera makes during AF and when it acquired focus.

I just received the Leica 36mm today (thanks to a forum member here :D). The framing is pretty accurate at longer distance, but once you get to like 7 or 8', it's slightly off, I guess I'll just have to get used to it.

And I remember someone already mentioned this at another thread and I can confirm this, you have to look into the VF DEAD CENTER to get a clear view, for whatever the reason, the SLIGHTEST angle would make the view fuzzy... Plus the pastic housing is not exactly a thrill either, would not recommend this :(

Like I said, the CV Minifinder is not ailed by this. Your image stays sharp even if you are off angle. And the framing is more accurate. Not to mention it is soooo much smaller.

Ok, call me shallow, but I hate the CV mini finders aesthetics. I love the X1's viewfinder, but am shocked to hear that it isn't up to par with other Leica VFs. I may just do without a VF. I like the accuracy of the LCD for the most part anyway.

That was me and I am happy that it wasn't my eyes.

Not even the Pen-Viewfinder does this.

I have it and it is very accurate and it looks good and it is made very very well feels like it should be on a Leica and had a yen price of $310.00 dollars on the box but the question I have is ...is there a green light in the Leica version that tells you it is in focus ? or does your eye just see the light on the x1?

The reason you have to look dead center to get clear vision on a Leica VF, is due to the fact that the reticule has a very narrow field of vision, just like a rifle scope. This is not a fluke but by careful design criteria. The pupil has to be placed perfectly along the optical axis of the VF which is coaxially mounted with the lens barrel. To aim the X1 with Leica VF you are forced to move the camera side to side and up and down, rather than use your pupil which is done by intuition. Once you got a clear vision of the image, within this well defined optical area that you want to capture, it is assumed that you now got the optical equivalency of the LED display, then the green focus rectangle is smack dead center on the subject matter. Press half way down on shutter to lock the settings and make adjustments int the composition and bingo you got that perfect shot.

The Leica VF (Leica product 18707) is an aiming device, not a viewing device, its main function is to aim the lens barrel of X1 on the subject matter as optically accurate as possible. I am familiar with theodolites' and rifle scopes' calibration and alignment protocols and the Leica VF's characteristics is awfully similar to these devices.

Hi,

I just bought the Helios VF (35-85-135), it was cheap (it does look cheap, but again so does the Leica one), it cost me around €40 on ebay.

It´s pretty accurate from 3m to infinty.

And i think it looks good on the X1.

Sorry about the quality of the photos (iphone);)

Pedro

That looks a really cost effective solution.

If I hadn't got the Leica VF I would also buy the Helios VF.

I see there's a UK seller on Ebay selling new at £35.

If it works well enough that's some saving:)
