M6 for super wide angle M8 for wide to telephoto

It occurs to me that I increasingly am taking the M6 along so that I can use my 21mm as a true super wide angle, and the M8 for the bulk of my photography. This also provides a backup camera body and allows me to use my other lenses at their true focal length if I want to.

  • Has anyone else started doing this?
  • Is there a film that is recommended such that it is going to be similar in resultant image as that from the M8 sensor?

I plan to scan the film using my Nikon Cool IIXP scanner and I guess I would prefer low ISO 35mm transparency film.

M9...

Well NO ......I can list many items that will need to be fixed on M9 (and I am sure will be by Leica via firmware and probably hardware changes) before I would be really tempted to make that jump from a M8. If I am still waiting in 3 years time with still no M10 on the horizon I might take a different view...however I think that is unlikely.

The M6 approach costs me nothing as I have a M6 already, and I like to use it sometimes with film in any case.

Andy thanks for the suggestion of using Fuji Astia ..I'll see if I can get some here.

I have an M8.2 which I love. I also have a M4-P and recently purchased a mint 21mm f3.4 SA to shoot film with. The experience has been very rewarding and now I'm looking for a leica MP. Keep your M6 and enjoy the unique character of what film has to offer. Plus you will leave yourself with more focal length choices between the two processes. Do whatever it takes to get you to that wonderful and elusive image that is out there...some where.

I fully agree and this is what I am doing. I actually have wondered how many people would buy a 1.3 adapter unit if it were available for a Full Frame M camera (essentially making M9 behave like M8)?

Such a device would facilitate the 75mm to be used as a 75mm or with adapter 100mm which most DSLR cameras suggest as the ultimate portrait lens. . It also allows a set of prime focus lenses to give 21, 28, 35, 50, 70, 75,100, 90, 120 from just a hand full of lenses (shown in bold). I doubt that a device like this would be commercially viable but the combination of M8 with a FF (M9 or M6) does this defacto. I guess the real challenge is to achieve colour uniformity across the scanned film and the digital images.

I actually believe that the M8 crop factor forces the user to get in closer and make more revealing photos. It also helps me at least to think about framing the picture better and getting the right angle.

Although not based on detailed knowledge, I expect a "universal" 1.33x M adapter would be large, cumbersome & expensive + the image quality will suffer, probably more than is acceptable. Leica M lenses are renowned for their optical quality and I don't think anyone would like to fork out (even) more money only to end up with a medium quality final result & reduced ergonomics.
