I have a 90 Summacron M ASPH, serial #3894xxx. On my M9 it reads "uncoded" under the "info." However, I thought the 3894xxx lenses were coded. Also, I can't find this lens under the "lens detection."

BTW, the lens takes tact sharp pics, so, I don't know what I'm losing with this "uncoded" thing.

Questions: Is this lens uncoded? If so, should I get it coded? If I don't, what are the draw backs? You get it, I'm not familiar with this issue--HELP!

You can easily check if your lens is coded, the six bit code (black and white dots) is marked on the bayonet and well visible.

If not, you can choose to select the proper code from the camera, model number is 11884/11885.

The code will have no or neglible effect in real life for this particular lens.

Cheers,

Ario

The code (if you have it or pay to have it done on an older lens and set lens ID ON) or setting the lens ID manually does two things:

1. correct for vignetting as the raw file is written -- important for wide angles, but not for teles, since the correction is said to be aperture-independent and the only vignetting on a tele occurs at the widest aperture.

2. add lens ID information to the EXIF.

You might care about 2, so decide if it is worth the trouble of turning lens ID manual entry back off when you change to another lens.
