Guest Chris M Posted February 26, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 26, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello everyone, I'm wondering? with 2 weeks left on my warranty (original factory) if I can send my M8 and 90 apo cron and the 28 cron to leica and have these lens specifically calibrated to focus sharply at f2 - 5.6, I only shoot at these f stops. The shots I get are pretty soft at f2 , especially the 90 apo cron. Also, my camera went back for a shutter problem about 3 months after I bought it [brand New] and (I have lost my receipt of all the Free warranty work they performed in New Jersey) Is there a way to access the receipt info from going online to leica? to see exactly what was performed in detail on my M8 at that time? Just want to cover my bases and dial those lens in to work (SHARPLY) wide open. thanks, chris m.

Guest Chris M Posted February 28, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 28, 2010 After 5 days I guess I'll answer my own reply, Thats a big yes, NJ Leica will be more than happy to make all necessary adjustments for both crons to shoot perfectly crystal clear and razor sharp at f2, and any other possible tweaks,ie; rangefinder the old M8 may need for (FREE)!! yea!! out of warranty in 6 days, I'm assuming they will check the whole package, free sensor cleaning too (maybe)? I'l be good to go for another 5 years hopefully? chris m.
mwilliamsphotography Posted February 28, 2010 Share #3 Posted February 28, 2010 What you may want to do is inquire as to at what distances they'll do the calibration for the M90/2AA. My understanding from a recent experience is that you can get spot-on wide open performance at closer distances, or farther distances, but not both. The one I tried was calibrated for midrange to infinity very well, but I could not achieve critical focus wide open at minimal distance ... which is what I wanted. Worth at least asking about, and specifying based on your shooting style. -Marc
brianv Posted March 1, 2010 Share #4 Posted March 1, 2010 Having one of the older Summicrons made this job much easier... Unscrew the optics module, put two layers of copper tape on the focus mount, screw back in... Perfect wide-open and close-up on the M8.
jaapv Posted March 1, 2010 Share #5 Posted March 1, 2010 I don't know - I sent my Summicron 90AA to Will van Manen and he calibrated it to the middle of the tolerance span at 1m, 3m, 10m and infinty and it came back focussing perfectly at all distances and at all apertures. Afaik this lens should not exhibit any appreciable focus shift. I might add that it had been to Solms before but I was not happy about infinity focus. Why not both? Sounds like more adjustment work was needed on lens or body...
