likalar Posted February 23, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 23, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Leica M9, 90mm, 50mm, 35mm The eastern half of the Bay Bridge is being rebuilt to meet modern earthquake standards. Here are 3 views showing the old rigid steel bridge and the partially completed new bridge. The vast amounts of steel framework was recently installed as a temporary means of installing/supporting the new roadway's sections that will eventually be suspended by cables. In the third photo, to the left, an installed section of roadway can be seen. After all the new roadway sections are slipped into place, supported by the framework, new towers (not yet built) will be readied for the cables that will suspend these sections from high above. After the cables are attached, and the roadway is securely in place, all the steel framework will be removed. The results should please the eye, if not the wallet. Comments always welcome. Thanks for looking! Larry

elansprint72 Posted February 23, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 23, 2010 Very interesting series- please keep us updated as work progresses. Can't help thinking it all looks a bit precarious. What if the 'quake happened now?
TimF Posted February 23, 2010 Share #3 Posted February 23, 2010 Can't help thinking it all looks a bit precarious. What if the 'quake happened now? You're not supposed to ask questions like that! Fascinating series.

likalar Posted February 23, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted February 23, 2010 Thanks all, for the nice comments. The original bridge took 3+ years to build. This one started in 2002, and should be ready for traffic in 2013. The original estimate in 1996 was 1.5 billion. Now the official estimate is 6.3 billion, but will possibly cost an actual 9 billion. I swing by there every few months (to see how the money's being spent), weather permitting, in a little aluminum "geezer boat" that my wife bought for me and the dog last year. I'll revisit every so often and gladly show the progress, or post additional views. Again, thank you. Larry
