lsolum Posted February 22, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 22, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) My new M9 had a fair amount of sensor dust. Use of a Giotto Blower & Photographic Solutions Sensor Swab & Eclipse fluid removed most, but not all of the spots. I live in the Champaign-Urbana area of central Illinois, where there are no camera repair shops in a 50 mile range. So I thought I would try to get a one day cleaning done while in New York City on Thursday. Any recommendations?
Advertisement Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 Hi lsolum, Take a look here Recommendation: M9 Sensor Cleaning in NYC. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted February 22, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 22, 2010 Just swipe it again until it is clean. One or two passes are sometimes not enough. And make sure you do not use too much fluid, One or two drops is enough. In my experience using too much will float the dust but not remove it. I've tried four passes. I've used Sensor Swabs fairly extensively on my D3 & sometimes I just don't seem to be able to remove all the dust. It may be a problem with my technique. I would still appreciate any suggestions for a professional cleaning in NYC.

lsolum Posted February 22, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted February 22, 2010 Cant give you that from this side of the pond. But Leica themselves are in Allendale, NJ. Thanks again! That would be great, but I will only be in New York from late Wednesday night through Thursday evening. And I will be giving a talk on the upper west side in the middle of the day. If anyone can help with NYC recommendation for someplace that can do a one day turnaround on a sensor cleaning, I would be most appreciative.
sanyasi Posted February 22, 2010 Share #6 Posted February 22, 2010 I bought my M9 from Craig at Kurland Photo. They are located on Broadway and Mercer (about half block south from Mercer on the east side of the street) in the Village, in the same building as the Leica Gallery. You can take the subway down (the Lexington if coming from the east side and I believe the R or Q if coming more from the West side, but check the maps because I always forget which one). You might give them a call. I don't know what they charge for sensor cleaning, but the service at Kurland on the buying side has been top notch. You can get more exact address and hours info at Kurland Photo. While you are there, you might ask about used equipment if you are in the market for lenses. Also, I believe the Leica Gallery opens at noon so you if you are interested in seeing what that is all about, plan accordingly. I don't know what camera stores on the upper West Side around Columbia--haven't heard of anything. You could try BHPhoto which is located around Penn Station. An easy subway ride, but the place is a zoo so I don't know whether they can turn something around that quick. Same goes for Adorama, which isn't too far from BH. In all cases, I would call and make an appointment.

lsolum Posted February 22, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted February 22, 2010 I bought my M9 from Craig at Kurland Photo. . . . I don't know what they charge for sensor cleaning, but the service at Kurland on the buying side has been top notch. Thank you so much. I spoke with Kurland & they do not do sensor cleaning--but they were very nice & recommended that I do it myself with a Q-tip & rubbing alcohol. After initially posting this, I got gib_robinson's recommendations, which I will check out. Update: Lens & Repro can do a same day turnaround. Their new hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
sanyasi Posted February 22, 2010 Share #9 Posted February 22, 2010 My understanding is that Tamarkin no longer has a New York City shop. They are now located solely in Connecticut.
gib_robinson Posted February 23, 2010 Share #10 Posted February 23, 2010 My understanding is that Tamarkin no longer has a New York City shop. They are now located solely in Connecticut. I just checked their website. The only address they now list on their contact page is their Connecticut address. Thanks for the tip. --Gib
