Anything expected from Leica at PMA?

I think Leica is not even attending PMA - Canon isn't.

Canon USA Confirms It Will Not Attend PMA 2010 (UPDATED)

A new 35 'lux got sort of leaked through a blog photo - but no time frame for Leica's official announcement.

Andy,

On another thread, someone who is at PMA confirmed - No Leica. I know these shows are expensive to attend but Leica really needs to get pros to buy the S2 and I feel the only way they will do that, is to let people pick it up and see the different way it handles from a modular MF. Research has consistently shown that the companies who market and advertise to a greater extent are more successful than those in the same lines of business, who don't.

Andy,

Just heard a whisper from a friend that the 35 Lux could be next Wednesday but almost certainly no 28 Lux at the moment. Maybe they are waiting until they cure the red edges :-}} Having got an excellent chrome 35 ASPH Lux already, the new 35 Lux is of little interest to me, whereas the 28 Lux might well be.

Leica have talked about there being additional lenses in preparation but the lens catalogue is already quite crowded - 14 ways to go wider than 50mm - so apart from the obvious 35mm Summilux replacement and filling in the gaps with a 28mm and 75mm Summilux, it's difficult to know where they can go. A 28mm Summilux is just going to rob sales from the 24mm and 35mm Summiluxes or the 28mm Summicron.

What would interest me would be a new variable focal length lens, just perfect for travel.

[Edit: Checking the PMAI web-site, Leica are not listed as an exhibitor. Once the likes of Canon abandon ship, makes you wonder where PMA is headed. Samsung seems to be making a lot of noise. Oh, and there's a new line up of 5 cameras from GE. Can't wait].

The speed with which Leica opens flagship stores in many different big towns world wide surely shows, what strategy regarding marketing Leica is practicing.

I greatly prefer a store with permanent access a few hours of travel time away over some fair one day of travel time away in the US.

Leica prepares or has prepared now shops in London, Germany, Hong Kong, that are quite close to my travel designations.

The Tri 28-35-50 is a very useful lens.

It has advantages when you want one lens, especially if its dusty etc to change, if you need quick lens changes wedding, street BUT it is a little slow.

A 24-35-50 f2 would be a wonderful combo for travel especially.

Any one interested?

The PMA floor layout this year looks to be about 1/2 the area what it was when I went to Vegas in 2007. In '07 it already had a lot of space devoted to non-camera stuff like book-publishing systems, inkjet papers, bags and such. Either Nikon or Canon that year (I forget which) did not have a booth, just an invitation-only private room. Local dealers near me have been sending fewer and fewer people.

I think between the economy, the internet, the collapse of film-based infrastructure (minilabs and such), and travel (read - "flying") headaches, PMA has lost a lot of drawing power for both exhibitors and audience, at least temporarily. If the audience doesn't come, the exhibitors don't want to spend the money - and if the exhibitors don't come, the audience gets smaller.

I notice Hasselblad, PhaseOne, Leaf, Mamiya and Zeiss do not seem to be on the exhibitors list, either.

In the early 80's I went to PMA when it filled McCormick Place in Chicago. Those days are gone.

If I did not already have a V2 MATE (one of the very last batch which came out of the factory coded - it was a 30% discount lens), I would certainly be interested in a new Tri-Elmar. I think it would need to remain at 28mm for the wide end, as the M9's widest frame lines are 28mm. I know you can guess at framing for 24mm by peering around the edges of the VF but I don't think that is how Leica works. Now if they could do a Quad Elmar 28-35-50-75..... I am not sure how that could communicate with the camera to distinguish between 50 and 75, given that they use the same frame lines, maybe a shutter over one of the coding pits.
