After years of anonymous Japanese DSLRs I just bought my first Leica - a fully upgraded M8. I actually bought a partially upgraded one last week but it was faulty on arrival. The retailer (Sean @ Camera West) went to extra-ordinary lengths to resolve matters. I now have something way beyond what I initially thought I was buying and am a Camera West customer for life. Thank you Sean.

I was actually intending to buy an X1 but for the extra little bit of money I decided to go for a used M8. I think I made the right decision. Anyway, have not had much of a chance to get out and use it but here's one of the first shots from the camera. It's of my other favorite thing to come out of Germany, my German Shorthaired Pointer, Oscar :

Welcome. Nice dog. You made a good choice of upgrading from the X1 in my opinion. For a few extra bucks it will bring you much pleasure. I know mine certainly has been a great purchase, no regrets. What lens did you get with it?

Thanks. The best I could afford with the body was a used but mint 50mm f/2.5 Summarit. I'll probably add a 28mm in the near future but I can live with the 50mm for a while. It's not cheap getting into a Leica for the first time and I didn't want to push the budget too much - that Leica glass gets bloody expensive!

Just curious. I would like to know why you chose the 50mm instead of 35mm.

i went for the 50 because i shoot mostly my family, friends and dogs out in the field. with my other cameras i often found myself at 3 zoom (the 50 is about 2 times). what i have learned is that i need either a 28 or 24, and based on this forum i am currently leaning towards the 28. the 50 is just too tight for me to capture my little ones around the house, but its been great outdoors and in the field.

here is the first photo of our GSP, not a good shot, just one of the first i took. i love the B&W, it really shows you how mother nature made those " ticks " to act as camouflage (since most animals see in B&W), his underside almost disappears in the leaves.

Welcome BMC, and nice shot as well. Hope to see more of your pictures in the photo forums, there is an entire different world over there.

The Summarrit line of lenses are fantastic performers. If Lars was reading this I'm sure he would tell you the same. Very nice compact lenses. Also, you mentioned the 28 or 24 as a choice and I have the 28 Summicron and love the perspective for the M8, it spends 90% of the time on my M8. Lot's of people here seem to like the 24mm lenses and I can see how it also might be a nice lens on the M9 with a 35mm as the next step up in one's lens quiver.

But, the 50 summarit is a lens that is compact and a great choice. Hang on to it. Here are some shots taken with it: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/103058-50mm-summarit-f-2-5-portrait.html

And, thanks you guys for not posting the first picture here on LUF of a house cat sleeping on the couch! :D

Great shot. Looks like you caught him nicely in "mid-shake".
