Well,

I got Digital M system few years ago mainly for my travel assignments (shooting stock when traveling for TV/video work). My 2 M8s were great, and did some amazing images. Even with ALL shortcomings of first digital M, I was happy with results...

Now, my last traveling assignment was to India (7 weeks, all over the country): one documentary, one feature film. I was taking all video gear from Canada (Sony EX1/Canon 5DMKII) and all the lenses/accessories, so I decided to bring another Canon (1DsMKIII) to have full kit for my still photography.

Oh, boy! Did I miss my M system!!!

I felt stupid walking down the streets of Delhi or Mumbai having these monsters around my neck and on my shoulder... The bulk. The sign on my forehead: "please, steal this from me...". Even when riding the scooter with this gear with me after 1/2 it was a pain...

How I missed my M8:mad:

I did sell one M8 and ordered M9 before I left, and when I came back in February my new M was waiting for me. Today, I picked it up and my M system is complete.

First impressions are very positive. Just one thing was enough for me: FULL FRAME...

Some great work on the links - I seem to see a preference for the 85mm L1.2 ? or was it all zooms? AND I have to agree with you on how silly you feel humping that kind of kit around in the wrong place (see the discussion on the Yerevan thread).

 

For me, we're now getting towards photographers' heaven - we can have incredibly competent DSLRs (with built in video to boot!) and we can have a camera like the M9 which lets us extend the zone in which we can comfortably work.

..sure know what you mean about not having an m but no one really cares what you look like when you're actually out there getting some great stuff! Good luck with the 9, it's a beast.. and keep doing what you're doing so well. it may get a bit lost on the glidecam though.. really enjoyed looking through your pics:)

Some lovely shots. Must have been an amazing trip.

 

However, on the last shot you posted, the graduated filter gives a very false look to the scene. The abscence of orange reflections in the foreground water is a give-away, as are the orange trees in the background and the lack of long shadows indicating that the shot was not taken at sunset, but more like early afternoon.

 

It's good to experiment, and plain covercast skys are certailny a problem to deal with, but in this case I think it might have been better to use a neutral grad filter or even darken the sky using a variety of techniques in post. If you applied the orange grad filter in post, I'd like to see an elternate version.
