Focus Posted February 18, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 18, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just got it today, second hand from a shop with 3 months warancy. It feels great and I am really happy with my new "mate". Although since the warancy is not forever I would like to get to know the most common bugs/errors and problems that can occur. So if there is any collected list with these on this forum or elsewhere on the web I would appreciate it, so I could check right away if it has any of them Regards
Advertisement Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 Hi Focus, Take a look here I finally got a M8, buglist?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
cocker Posted February 18, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 18, 2010 I have had a M8 and an 8.2. I have had no problems or "bugs" at all with either of them. Enjoy your camera.
Double Negative Posted February 18, 2010 Share #3 Posted February 18, 2010 If it works - shoot it! Enjoy.

wparsonsgisnet Posted February 18, 2010 Share #5 Posted February 18, 2010 You might like to read the FAQ on the Leica download site. It's a great camera. Enjoy.
Focus Posted February 18, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted February 18, 2010 When reading my first post in this thread my question seems somewhat negative offensive against the M8. Now that is absolutely not the purpose, I am totally satisfied, this camera meets all expectations I have had, I just thought to take precautions since I know Leica is expensive when it comes to service, but right now I just want to enjoy this great piece of photo equipment Regards
SJP Posted February 18, 2010 Share #7 Posted February 18, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) If you have only one battery get 1-2 extra (Leica original, they are bl**dy expensive but that is something you will have to get used to). The M8 has the unfortunate property of "dying" without prior warning, especially after/during a flurry of shots in c mode. I believe there is an "low charge beep" warning but I have never heard it (maybe because I had set volume = off?). Anyway it is a good idea to have a few spare charged batteries at hand. The main bug hoever is cramp in your facial muscles due to excessive smiling;) Enjoy your new toy. EDIT: it may be worth mentioning that batteries are in short supply at present, see M9 subforum
piblondin Posted February 19, 2010 Share #8 Posted February 19, 2010 Check for banding at high ISO settings. Try shooting something completely black that fills the frame, like a couch, indoors at ISO 2500. Or just take a shot with the lens cap on. Also, check for back/front focusing. Focus Posted February 19, 2010 Author Share #9 Posted February 19, 2010 Thank you for the advice. What does banding look like and what is Back Front focusing? Sorry for the simple questions
Focus Posted February 19, 2010 Author Share #10 Posted February 19, 2010 Thank you for the quick response. I tried to shoot with the cap on, and on the camera I actually get that slightly lighter vertical line at the point as showed in your posted image when watching the camera screen, but after some second or so ( when the image has finished loading? ) the whole image gets darker and the line dissapears, I cannot see it when loaded into my computer either. Do you know what this means?
wda Posted February 19, 2010 Share #11 Posted February 19, 2010 Check to see if you have the latest firmware. (See Leica site). If you have discreet mode enabled, make sure you do not shoot in continuous mode. I am not sure whether this anomaly has been fixed, but it is simple to avoid. I can't think when you would ever want that unlikely combination of settings. Enjoy a great camera.
wda Posted February 19, 2010 Share #12 Posted February 19, 2010 And a battery tip: when not in use, store these expensive batteries in the fridge (in a Tupperware box, to keep them condensation-free). NB: that's fridge, not freezer! Lithium batteries age fast at room temperature, and will die within a couple of years in a warm climate. String them (pref. half charged) will prolong their life significantly, by some years. Similarly, Li batteries don't like being fully discharged: prolong their life by topping up the charge often. I don't dispute Rich's points on batteries but I have never felt the need to keep my spares in the fridge. Living in a temperate climate, my spare batteries are rotated through my Leica cameras to spread their use. My Digilux 2 is nearly six years old and I am still using the original two Leica Lithium batteries. (fingers crossed!) They have traveled abroad with me, but have not suffered tropical or arctic conditions. Perhaps that helps their longevity.
Focus Posted February 20, 2010 Author Share #13 Posted February 20, 2010 Thank you again for the advice. I noticed single blue pixels appearing on some images in random places, but this seems to be a normal thing, and not too annoying as these pixels disappear when the file has been converted from DNG
menos I M6 Posted February 21, 2010 Share #14 Posted February 21, 2010 Before I picked up my used M8.2 at a used camera shop some weeks ago, I jumbled up a short checklist (in no particular order, nor complete). It might be of help for others: SD cards check: - cycle all SD cards and test "format card in camera" Firmware: - version check 2.004 vertical line problem: - body cap on - ISO2500 - all other ISO speeds also - files check on notebook "Banding and ghosting are fixed since 2006." http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1241983&postcount=2 light at edge of frame banding: - check with strong light at the edge of the frame - strong banding in underexposed image parts? green banding (light at frame edge) scroll wheel: - problems, navigating - responsive, erratic? all buttons working? LCD on top - no bleeding? Mount check: - showing wear - play with different lenses? - stuck with different lenses? Leather ok? Signs of impact? package and accessory complete? year of manufactur? - check serial against Erwin Putz and Summilux.net 1st batch Leica M8: SN3100000 - SN3112000 Leica M8 year 2006 total: 12001 Enjoy your new camera - it is a great piece of equipment.
