this strange colour artefact appeared just once on the jpg file only whilst shooting dng+jpg fine (b+w) together in single, standard shutter mode. it has not appeared since. does anyone recognise or know what it means?

Your picture makes me think of this:

Wierd line in the middle of the picture (1)

Wierd line in the middle of the picture (2)

Different, I agree, but exactly in the same place.

Yep, this is a memory error. If it is on the SD card, always reformat before re-using. If it is on your computer's harddrive - test the drive for errors. Same if it is your computer's memory.

I had a similar error and found that I had a damaged memory chip in my Mac.

Hope it does not re-appear!

Well, I don't think the problem comes from the SD card. Some other weird artifacts like this have been reported here on the M9. If the origine of the problem would reside on SD cards (as some people pretend), in the three and an half years since the M8 hit the market, M8 users would have also reported them. I cannot remember any report of similar artifacts on the M8.

Maybe is just a firmware issue and it will be solved in future firmware versions.

thanks for your response. i'm not overly concerned since it appeared just once and the dng is unaffected. it's a good idea to check over my mac's drives and ram to see if there's anything unusual, i hadn't thought of that..
