jimbo035 Posted February 14, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 14, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) A few years of Digital "photography" (latterly with a D-Lux 4) have failed to win me over from the foregoing fifty with film. Delighted with a recently aquired Leicaflex and especially its 21/4 Super Angulon, a III + 50/2 Summar is "calling" Universally disparaged the Summar may be, but do they not give a wonderful semi-soft focus effect when shot at wide apertures ? Very beautiful as I recall, great for scenics, women, & romantic images etc. What is the correct lens hood... and if impossible to find, what present-day type will suffice ? Advertisement Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 Hi jimbo035, Take a look here Which hood for a f2/50 Summar ?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
sender Posted February 14, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 14, 2010 Leica made a large rectangular shade for the Summar. I found a Series V hood with screw in adapter more convenient, although if I used clamp on filters, I couldn't use that hood. The Summar has the same outer diameter and threads as many other screw mount lenses, I think 36mm clamp on, and 34mm screw in. Because of the standard sizing, many accessories can be found. Enjoy. The glass is soft and prone to damage from cleaning - bearing in mind the age of the typical Summar and amount of cleaning a typical lens will have had, especially if previous owners didn't take account of the soft glass - so many will now give 'soft' images because of damage to the 'soft' glass, not to mention the usual issues with older lenses of dust and haze. Find a nice clean example - quite difficult, I'm fortunate to have two really nice ones and a hazy example - and you will find it to be a perfectly useable and sharp lens, even wide open. I did see a mint and boxed one a few years ago, it wasn't cheap but I really wish I'd bought it now!
