Laujan Posted February 12, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 12, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Good night! I use a m7 for fun and other times 5d ... I like both, but I'm thinking about buying a m8. But I'm afraid to get rid of the team fee to buy the M8 ... I can appreciate the quality of the image sensor that I see for example Flickr or on the web ... Leica lens is that they are incredibly good quality but can anyone compare the quality of the camera with any other known??? Thanks! I love this forum ... Advertisement Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 Hi Laujan, Take a look here with that camera you can compare the quality of the M8 sensor?Good night! I use a m7. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted February 12, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 12, 2010 Depends on whom you ask. Everybody agrees it is built like a tank, but for some users it has been temperamental, and for a few disastrous. Mine have been utterly reliable over the years and I believe that is true for the vast majority. It is, after all, a quite complicated hand-built product, far more complicated than for instance a film M, with all that that implies. As for the sensor, it is as good as a CCD sensor can get, and that is very good. It is not for nothing that MF cameras use CCD sensor. But the image quality is for instance, amongst other things, created by the absence of an AA filter, so it will show up any dead pixel mercilessly. And you will get the more noisy high-ISO image that a CCD will give over a CMos sensor, but again that is a tradeoff, as it will also lack the digital signature of the CMos sensor. Michael Tyler Posted February 12, 2010 Share #3 Posted February 12, 2010 I shot the M8 alongside Canon's cameras for a full season of weddings, so I have lots of means for comparison. The iso noise is a comparable level to Canon's older crop cameras, i.e. 40D, Rebel, etc. Except that the M8 noise is a more pleasing pattern, if one is looking closely at things like that. But it is a noisy camera. In bright light this is a moot point. At night the 5D will have a much easier time of things. The shutter click sound is different and a bit more quiet than a 5D. But it will be more pronounced than what you're used to with the M7. It's not silent by any means. The resolving power is just as good or better than the (original) 5D. The M8 has no AA filter, and this along with the quality optics produces very detailed images. It is never wanting for resolution. If you are shooting for clients, you should test the camera first to see if it fits your needs.
carbon_dragon Posted February 16, 2010 Share #4 Posted February 16, 2010 Good night!I use a m7 for fun and other times 5d ... I like both, but I'm thinking about buying a m8. I have a 5D and an M8. The 5D is indeed lower in noise, but I haven't felt I've lost quality. That said, I still have my 5D, so if I were doing anything telephoto, I'd probably use the 5D. The M8 has a very interesting IR capability with an IR filter (a nearly black deep red filter) which doesnt' make it hard to use as it would a DSLR because you're not looking through the lens. Which is why I see it as a complement to a DSLR rather than a replacement.
wparsonsgisnet Posted February 16, 2010 Share #5 Posted February 16, 2010 Not having done a "direct" comparison, I will say that I never got images with my M6 and M4 that are as good at those from the M8. This includes both a Nikon 30 and a Minolta II as negative scanners. I also dont' miss the wet process, tho the b/w's are not quite 100% there. It's not the process; I think it's the missing silver in the print.
Angelos Viskadourakis Posted February 20, 2010 Share #6 Posted February 20, 2010 i use Leica MP and i consider myself a good negative developer and a very good scanner i also use M8 for b&w guess with which of the two systems the photo was made. shootinglulu Posted February 20, 2010 Share #7 Posted February 20, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have become quite good at spotting pictures taken with the M8, on the web When i make a wrong guess, invariably the camera used will be a ff Canon with L lens. Not sure if any conclusion can be drawn from this seeing as there are so many pictures out there taken with the Canon.
Angelos Viskadourakis Posted February 20, 2010 Share #8 Posted February 20, 2010 my favorite combination with LEICA MP and 35 asph.cron is FUJI Neopan 400 developed in Rodinal 1+100 dilution (partially standing) the above photo is with Leica M8 straight out of the camera BW jpeg.with zero or very minimal -maybe -curves adjustment.M8 BW jpeg. has all the merits of analogue BW 35mm Leica M format plus more maybe many more. Thanks to all again ... I remain attentive to your comments and opinions!
