I wonder the price. It looks like a good contender... shaped like the VC one, but seems to stick out past the back of the camera. It could be the one to beat price vs. functionality wise.

Sticking out past the back of the camera is actually a good thing- it allows you to look through without shoving your nose against the LCD. I love my black Voigt but it makes me have to press my nose against the LCD. Leica's and this panny wouldn't.

I never said it wasn't a good thing.

Oh ok sorry. You said "x and y are good about it but it sticks out past the back of the camera." If you thought it was good I thought you would have said "and it sticks out past the back of the camera."

Not to argue...but I said...

Since the VC one does not stick out past the back of the camera, and a few of us have noted that this is not good, I thought I was being clear that it was a positive since I did preface it with: "It looks like a good contender..."

I misread. You are right 100% on that point and your comment now that I re-read.

I noticed the Voigt has 2 screws connecting the finder to the pedestal- What would happen if someone simply moved the finder back on the pedestal moving the front screw to the back? I lack the small screwdriver to make that happen.

Interesting..I ordered a Helios to see if I like it, I know people have adjuted the screws and used a shim to get better accuracy, but sliding seems like it would require redrilling.

There are two screws in a line. If the front one was just removed and the back one replaced after sliding the viewfinder back on the pedestal, no new hole would need to be drilled. It should work.

I don't have that small of a driver so I just keep my viewfinder as far back as possible while still having the camera recognize that a viewfinder is attached.

You know, the X1 does support an external monitor via HDMI. It wouldn't be too terribly difficult to pull an LCD electronic viewfinder out of a cheap compact, fit it to a plate that will sit in the hotshoe, power it with an external battery and connect it via HDMI. Then you'd have manual focus capability while looking through the viewfinder instead of having to stare at the back of the camera.

I'm not going to do it, but I think it's possible.

I'm unaware of any cheap compact with a live view viewfinder. maybe to take apart a gf1 evf - if that's what you mean...not a very well integrated solution though.

Most of the Olympus and Fujifilm Superzoom cameras had EVFs. And I agree, it's not a very integrated solution -- more a proof of concept of adding an external viewfinder that would allow focusing and not drain the battery.

I picked up a vintage adjustable Leica viewfinder on eBay. On the plus side, it's adjustable from 35-135, so I'm able to look at the LCD and look through the finder and get it set to exactly the right frame area.

On the downside, it mirrors everything -- wasn't expecting that. lol

I finally received my helios - it says accurate from 3m - infinity.. i'd dispute that.. also, So inaccurate before 3m (which is a lot of what I do with the x1) with no correction lines - so.. thumbs down on that one, it'll be going to 'the 'bay'

Another complaint about it, it doesn't stick over the edge, and doesn't work well for we with specs. I'm not sure I would ever adjust to an OVF, it's just not very practical in terms of achieving focus or framing.. maybe I just need to try a better one.

You could basically use any viewfinder, cheap, expensive etc. It has to align well though, the center of the actual image you take should ideally be the actual center of the viewfinder. This is not always the case, even with Leica viewfinders for the X1, they will be "off" by a bit and cause misalignment. The Oly viewfinder, which I used for a while had a serious misalignment problem, therefore absolutely unusable for serious photography. I am currently testing a VC which seems to be OK only that the center of the VF should be raised 1...2 Millimeters. I have not used the Leica VF which should be near to perfect, and also near to unaffordable.

I bought the VC 35mm black for 109€ which seemed to be worth trying out.

I have a Leica 50mm VF for my IIIF which is very badly aligned, the VF is very high quality, but the alignment is very poor. This is also the case with the 90mm Leica VF, if these were both OK I would of bought the X1 Leica VF, but as it stands I don't think it can cut the cake, at least compared to the initial investment.

Most adjustable viewfinders, i.e. 35 - 135mm, have a lever on the rear that adjusts the height/tilt of the sight.

You can compare the image on the LCD to the image through the viewfinder and adjust that rear lever to achieve perfect alignment.
