jsrockit Posted February 17, 2010 Share #61 Posted February 17, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Don't get your old M8's shutter repaired -- get it replaced with the better M8.2 shutter! (The noisy shutter from my M8 was the primary reason I sold it . . . still waiting for my X1.) -g If I have to pay for it I'll probably go for the new shutter. However, if the older type of shutter is a lot cheaper, I'll get that. I'm not concerned with the noise to be honest. I'm more concerned with reliability. What have you seen from the early X1's that's giving you cold feet? Just curious because I've had just the opposite reaction..I'm more certain now that I'd like to get an X1

Just curious because I've had just the opposite reaction..I'm more certain now that I'd like to get an X1 I met with a few people over the weekend who are in the industry and they hated the camera so much. I tried to stick up for it, but then they asked "have you used it?" I had to answer no and they said I should go demo it before spending the $2000 on it. After our discussion, it sounded like a good idea. These were diehard Leica fans and not one of them liked the camera.

There is always going to be a certain Luddite reaction to anything that threatens the status quo. Have those 'who are in the industry' used the X1 themselves? By 'diehard' do you mean Leica film camera users? No camera is ever going to be perfect but some including the X1 have very innovative, practical and usable features. The X1 will enable superb quality photographs to be taken more unobtrusively than many other cameras and it can be slipped into your pocket afterwards just like a Minox 35. I would not be surprised if an interchangeable lens version of the X1 is being developed in which case it will be to the M8 and M9 what the the Leica CL was to the M4 ... but it will probably be more usable and successful than the CL. Cheers dunk

Cheers dunk No, these were film M and digital M users. They have demo-ed the X1, but not used it for any long period of time. They all said they wanted to like it, but it just didn't feel worth $2000 and the AF was a big issue for them. Now, I don't agree that the X1 is pocketable like a Minox. I don't let word of mouth scare me off... that is apparent in these threads. However, I think it would be smart to demo it myself just to be sure. So, which stores in NYC have a demo unit? Ben Ledbetter Posted February 25, 2010 Share #79 Posted February 25, 2010 Does Steve Jobs want a Leica? I hope he's still waiting for it. Apple and Leica seem to share the same marketing strategies – make their customers dangle for so long and so painfully that they give up and buy something else. jsrockit Posted February 25, 2010 Share #80 Posted February 25, 2010 Received this today: Dear Mr. (JSRockit), Leica dealers all over the country are just now receiving their very first units, and I'm guessing they will hand these over to customers that had pre-ordered months ago.
